Dating back to 1878, this historic estate maintains one of the rarest and most ancient winemaking techniques in the world, using 114 clay amphorae for fermentation—an approach introduced by the Romans over 2,000 years ago. After acquiring Casa Agrícola José de Sousa Rosado Fernandes in 1986, José Maria da Fonseca fulfilled a long-held dream of producing wine in Alentejo, on an estate rich in history and prestige. Today, the winery preserves its heritage with a traditional cellar, located below ground level, featuring amphorae and two treading mills, while also embracing modernity with a state-of-the-art facility equipped with 44 stainless steel tanks.
