Calatroni

Winery in Oltrepò Pavese

About the Winery

The heart of Calatroni’s winemaking philosophy can be summed up in three words: tradition, experience, and a deep passion for quality. Founded in 1964, Azienda Agricola Calatroni began when Luigi Calatroni—faced with the end of a sharecropping contract—made the bold decision to purchase the vineyard he once worked on. From that moment, a legacy was born.

Under the dedicated stewardship of Fausto and Marisa Calatroni, the winery grew and evolved, laying a strong foundation for future generations. Today, the third generation of the Calatroni family, brothers Cristian (37) and Stefano (32), bring a dynamic combination of tradition and innovation to the estate. With professionalism and passion, they have introduced cutting-edge enological and agronomic techniques, elevating the winery’s potential while staying true to its roots.

Located in Montecalvo Versiggia, between 180 and 320 meters above sea level, the estate’s vineyards benefit from ideal conditions for cultivating a wide range of grape varieties. Continuous technical refinement and a commitment to excellence have enabled Calatroni to fully harness the richness of its land.

Through their work, the Calatroni family contributes meaningfully to the growth and recognition of Oltrepò Pavese—a region brimming with potential, waiting to be discovered by wine lovers around the world.

About the Wines

Situated in the heart of Oltrepò Pavese—a region that ranks as the third largest Pinot Noir-producing area in the world with over 4,100 hectares of vineyards—Montecalvo Versiggia stands out as a true epicenter of excellence. It leads the entire territory in Pinot Noir cultivation, with two-thirds of its vineyard area devoted to this noble grape.

Azienda Agricola Calatroni has long embraced the challenge of interpreting all the nuances of Pinot Noir. In Oltrepò Pavese, this versatile varietal is traditionally vinified in a wide range of styles, and the Calatroni family has skillfully explored its many expressions, from elegant still wines to refined sparkling versions.

Oltrepò Pavese also holds a leading position in Italy for the production of Riesling grapes. While the region predominantly focuses on Italian Riesling, Calatroni has taken a distinctive path by placing its trust in Riesling Renano (Rhine Riesling)—a choice that sets the winery apart. Thanks to the area's favorable microclimate and thoughtful vineyard management, Calatroni has succeeded in crafting a wine that clearly reflects the classic organoleptic profile of this noble variety, showcasing its vibrant minerality, floral elegance, and aging potential.

Calatroni’s Tasting
Excellent tasting together with my Finnish friend/guest: we appreciated the friendliness with which we were welcomed and accompanied on the winery tour. The wines, multi-award-winning, are of great quality and were served with a tasty platter with local delicacies.
The Metodo Classico and the extra-brut Rosé are superb!

An educational and fun morning
We spent a beautiful morning at the Calatroni winery, not too big but very well-kept.
Our "Virgil" (whose name I don't remember, and I apologize) was perfect; besides the history of the winery and the Oltrepò area, he explained some truly interesting technical aspects of winemaking in a simple way.
A cheerful conclusion with a tasting of the winery's excellent wines, honorable mention for the "Michel" classic method.
We went home with several bottles of excellent wine.

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE
We booked a winery tour + lunch with a charcuterie board. What can I say, everything was perfect: the one-hour tour, very well-structured and with interesting and professional explanations. The lunch with the “platter” option, exceptional in both quality and quantity. Perfect wine pairing for each course. Kind, knowledgeable, and welcoming staff, excellent service.
We recommend it and we will be back
Excellent Pinot Nero and Sangue di Giuda

Picnic in the vineyard
We chose the "Picnic in libertà" experience and it was wonderful. The wine trekking part is not at all difficult. There is a small uphill section at the start but nothing impossible. The Calatroni route (provided by the map they give you) is a circuit and takes about an hour. If it's very hot, I'd suggest walking by about 10/11am to then return for the picnic hamper. In cooler weather, you could easily take the hamper with you and picnic in amongst the vineyards you pass. Part of the route is on the Saint Colombanus Way - the 7th C Irish abbott Colombanus founded a church in Bobbio, and pilgrims would travel along the very route you are taking! The picnic itself was delicious - fresh, seasonal food - and the wine was superb (we had the Calatroni Riesling). Kudos to the vineyard for the biodegradable or reusable containers. This is sustainable tourism at its best - highly recommended!
Try the Calatroni Riesling.
