CASA VINICOLA PIETRO NERA
About the Winery
Casa Vinicola Pietro Nera is one of the most important and prestigious wineries in Valtellina, with a long tradition of promoting and enhancing the local area, cultivating vineyards, and producing high-quality wines with unique characteristics, which have received awards in various national and international competitions. The Nera family, which has always owned it, is now in its fourth generation, represented by Stefano (winemaker and agronomist), Simone (sales director), and Angela (administration). They inherited the legacy of their predecessors: Bernardo Nera, who started the wine business back in 1897, followed by Guido Nera and his son, Pietro Nera, who has led the company to its current status since the 1960s.
About the Wines
The wines produced by the company come from the main grape variety grown in Valtellina: NEBBIOLO, whose local, indigenous variety is called "Chiavennasca." This wine is used to produce the DOC ROSSO DI VALTELLINA, VALTELLINA SUPERIORE DOCG (from the Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, and Valgella areas), VALTELLINA SUPERIORE DOCG RISERVA (from the same areas), and the prized SFORZATO DI VALTELLINA DOCG.
In addition to these "classics," our winemaker Stefano Nera has also experimented in recent years with making a rosé from Nebbiolo "Chiavennasca," producing the IGT ALPI RETICHE "CERASUM" (Azienda Agricola Caven), as well as creating a sweet passito, also from Nebbiolo "Chiavennasca" grapes, called the IGT ALPI RETICHE "Anomalia."
Non-native grape varieties are also grown in Valtellina, such as Chardonnay, used to produce two white wines, "La Novella" and "Rezio" (IGT ALPI RETICHE designation), and Cabernet Sauvignon, used for "Sorèl", blended with Nebbiolo Chiavennasca (IGT ALPI RETICHE designation).
