Fossa Mala

Winery in Friuli Grave

About the Winery

Villa Fossa Mala, formerly known as Villa Bassi della Meduna, is a historic estate that embodies the elegance and charm of the Veneto-Friuli countryside. The villa's origins date back to the 16th and 17th centuries, and its architecture reflects the traditional enclosed courtyard style that became a hallmark of the aristocratic villas in the region around 1600. The estate is graced by a centuries-old magnolia tree, a symbol of the villa's enduring legacy. Visitors to Fossa Mala can explore the remnants of its rural past, including a drinking fountain, cobblestone paving near the old stables, and the large arches on the first floor, once used as a hayloft. The villa's walls, constructed with alternating river stones and bricks, reveal the craftsmanship of centuries past. Today, Fossa Mala stands as a testament to the region's rich history, offering a unique experience for travelers who appreciate the blend of historical architecture, natural beauty, and the art of winemaking.

About the Wines

The Fossa Mala vineyard, densely planted and situated on low-lying land, is a model of modern viticulture rooted in tradition. With a planting density of 7,850 vines per hectare, the vineyard benefits from carefully selected rootstock, chosen for its compatibility with both native and international grape varieties. Through clonal and massal selection, these vines have been cultivated to produce high-quality grapes that reflect the unique terroir of the region. The vineyard's first 30 hectares, planted in the spring of 2003 in front of the villa, were later expanded by an additional seven hectares in 2008. The meticulous care given to the vineyard is evident in the exceptional wines produced at Fossa Mala, which range from classic Friulian varieties to innovative blends that capture the essence of the Veneto-Friuli region. Each bottle from Fossa Mala tells the story of a vineyard that honors its historical roots while embracing the future of winemaking.

A very relaxing experience
The tasting, led by Ilda, empathetic and knowledgeable, was very pleasant. The wines offered were lovely, accompanied by a platter full of excellent local products. The stay at the property was just as pleasant. The room overlooking the olive grove was comfortable and spacious.

Another perfect night
For the second year we have returned to this establishment that is, to say the least, perfect. The tour of the cellars and the wine tasting were conducted by Ilda, an exceptional girl for her professionalism, helpfulness, and kindness, which once again made the experience a very pleasant moment. The restaurant inside the establishment offers quality, kindness, and professionalism. All this surrounded by peace and tranquility, what we were looking for here we found once again.

Rushed wine tasting, not as described
I paid for 4 adults and 6 children to enjoy a wine tasting experience including food pairings, a tour of the winery advertised to have horse stables, a deer park, the vineyards, and the internal area with the casks. Or so I thought. When we arrived, we were seated outside immediately (no tour). The hostess brought four wine glasses (nothing for the children) and a board with some meat and cheese on it (the sum total of the food provided for all 10 people). I asked if the children might have something to drink. She brought one bottle of water (for 10 people) and 4 cups (for 10 people). When she brought our wine, I asked if we could please have more water and more cups. After about 15 minutes she had not yet brought this so I went inside and found her texting on her phone. When I asked about the tour, she said she'd walk us around after our third wine, but she was currently busy helping another group (which turned out to be one other couple inside, who might have also enjoyed a tour). And actually, she was texting on her phone. She finally walked us only to the processing building (no vineyards, no horse stables, no duck pond) and she continued texting on her phone while we followed her to the building with the barrels and casks. I was thoroughly unimpressed and frankly embarrassed. I had booked this as a treat for my brother's family who was visiting and it was our last night together. I wanted to show them some of the charm, beauty, and excellent wines in the region. We ended

Excellent!
Tasteful modern location, excellent assortment of wines from Friulano to Refosco with forays into the Classic Method.
We are not wine experts but this was an experience of conviviality and taste.
The accompanying platter with local cured meats and cheese was excellent.
Special mention to Ilda, who guided us in the tasting with professionalism and freshness.
