Giacomo Orlando Vini
(Winery in Colli Orientali)
About Winery and Wines
Giacomo Orlando Winery is located in Prepotto, precisely in Craoretto, in the wine-growing area known as “Colli Orientali del Friuli”, close to Collio Goriziano and Slovenska Brda that partly shares the type of soil. Once only considered a suitable area for producing excellent white wines, today Colli Orientali del Friuli - and Prepotto itself - is always more recognized for its native and international red varieties.
Giacomo is an Oenologist, who graduated in “Viticulture and Oenology” at the University of Udine, Giacomo has 18 years of experience in winemaking; previously as a cellarman and oenologist for excellence in the Friulian wine scene, obtaining several national and international awards. He uses “Vinicoltore” as a neologism that best represents who he is: the result of a life dedicated to research, work, and love for the land, a point of connection between wine culture and wine cultivation.
Giacomo Orlando Winery produces four wines, two whites and two reds.
Friulano: the scent is charming, with aromas of Friulano’s vineyards in bloom. The sip is harmonious and confirms this first feeling, as the taste of grapes is seasoned with sugar turned into alcohol. Its softness also makes it suitable for those who usually don’t bear white wines. It fears low temperatures.
Pinot Grigio Ramato (coppered): strong impact, charming and engaging. As it’s been tasted it becomes harmonious and complete; its “imperfections” turn into sweet sensations (due to alcohol). Suitable for everyone, both wine experts and not. Drinking it too cold is a shame, and, given the choice, a large glass is better.
Merlot: intense by vocation, an international variety that expresses a unique character among these hills. Notes of black cherry in alcohol and hints of vanilla and amaretto evolving into milk chocolate, background of delicate balsamic notes. Impossible not to appreciate the concentration, both on the nose and the palate, manifesto of the high extract, which makes it persuasive and at the same time balanced. Great structure is evident, its soft tannin also makes it appreciable as aperitif, for those not intimidated by the warm alcohol content.
Schioppettino of Prepotto: the perfume is spicy and penetrating, characterized by a strong note of white pepper that balances itself in a few moments. The sip is elegant and harmonious, but suddenly spicy enveloping notes explode, surprising the palate and revealing the character of a unique wine, by variety and terroir. In the mouth, it expresses lasting and delicate intensity.
