La Colombiera
About the Winery
La Colombiera is located in Castelnuovo Magra, near La Spezia, in the area overlooking the archaeological site of the ancient town of Luni, where Liguria and Tuscany meet.
Our family has been cultivating vineyards since the late 1970s, passing down this passion from one generation to the next in a hilly area close to the sea, overcoming the challenges of the rock-hard soil.
Our vineyards extend over 10 hectares in the DOC Colli di Luni area and are spread across Fosdinovo (near Massa), Sarzana, and Castelnuovo Magra (near La Spezia), where the winery is located.
We grow historic, high-quality grape varieties deeply rooted in the local winemaking tradition, particularly Sangiovese and Vermentino. Through careful cultivation, we enhance their main characteristics while preserving their authenticity.
The symbol of the winery is the statue menhir, a prehistoric statue of uncertain origin discovered in the Lunigiana area. It appears on our bottle labels in a modern interpretation, serving as a symbolic bridge between the past and the present.
About the Wines
La Colombiera winery was established in the late seventies by our far-sighted grandfather Francesco Ferro, who moved from the small Sicilian town of Salemi to Liguria, where he purchased a small plot of land at La Colombiera, a hamlet near Castelnuovo Magra, above the ancient town of Luni.
Our history begins there and then, when our grandfather, aware of the area’s winegrowing potential, decided to plant the first Vermentino vineyards and build what is still our winery today. The winery is our headquarters, where everything happens under the close watch of our father Piero, who enthusiastically supervises the whole production process, from harvesting to bottling. Every wine tells a story, our Vermentino tells our story very well: tradition, passion, and a watchful eye on the future blend together, and every year a glass of wine speaks of us.
We primarily produce Vermentino DOC Colli di Luni, crafted in two distinct styles: a traditional expression that highlights freshness and minerality, and a selection that showcases greater structure, complexity, and aging potential. Alongside our Vermentino, we also produce red and rosé wines based on Sangiovese, reflecting the character and versatility of our territory.
Today, our estate extends over 12 hectares, mainly planted with Vermentino vineyards, which thrive in our unique microclimate influenced by both the sea and the surrounding hills. Our philosophy combines respect for tradition with careful vineyard management, aiming to express the authentic identity of our land in every bottle.
