About Winery and Wines

La Sabbiona farm guesthouse is situated in a panoramic position on the wonderful hills which surround the medieval tower of Oriolo dei Fichi, in the heart of the Emilia Romagna Region, just a few kilometres away from Faenza. The farm has 28 hectares of land, 18 of which are vineyards while the rest is planted with cereals, fruit and Scalogno di Romagna. In this area which boasts a great artistic and historic heritage the Altini family is keen to preserve old recipes welcoming its guests in a traditional country house, carefully restored to blend the charm of the past with the comforts of the present.

At the moment the company has 28 hectares of which 18 are vineyards and the rest used for spelled and apricot crops. For some years we have also been exporting our products to foreign countries. We produce IGT, DOC and DOCG wines in the quantity of approximately 55,000 bottles per year.

SOME INFORMATION ON THE LESSER KNOWN VARIETIES

CENTESIMINO

Centesimino or Savignon Rosso is a vine discovered last century and is typical of the first hills of Faenza, in the area surrounding the Oriolo Tower. Dark ruby red in the glass, Centesimino conquers your palate with strong aromas of orange blossom, rose, violet, liquorice and anise.

MAYBE YOU DON'T KNOW THAT...

Centesimino has been cultivated since the 17th century on the hills of Faenza. The story goes that during the 1940s Pietro Pianori discovered a vine growing in the internal courtyard of a house in the center of Faenza in the province of Ravenna. This garden had high walls surrounding it and this is presumed to have preserved it from phylloxera, which is why this vine survived the epidemic that destroyed most Italian vines.

In the early 20th century the vine was known as Savignon Rosso or Sauvignon Rosso, perhaps for its aromatic characteristics or for its strength which recalls that of Savignon Blanc or the French Sauvignon Rouge. Centesimino was included in the national catalog of grape varieties in 2004.

CENTESIMINO TODAY

The rich aroma of Centesimino combines two unique characteristics: the passion cultivated with patience and the lively mood of Romagna wine producers. Only a small group of winemakers from the hills of Faenza are qualified for the production of this wine, simple but elegant and truly refined. It is also produced in the raisin version, to be tasted with dark chocolate for a perfect pairing.

FAMOSO

Famoso is a wine from Romagna which, after being abandoned for a certain period, has been reconsidered in the last decade. The vines are strong, easily adapting to rough soils and withstanding cold climates. It is nowadays cultivated in the areas of Forlì, Bertinoro, Ravenna, Faenza, Brisighella and Bagnacavallo and from its bunches winemakers obtain aromatic wines, similar to Moscato, with floral notes and nuances of dried, ripe and exotic fruit.

MAYBE YOU DON'T KNOW THAT...

The first document attesting to the Famoso is a table in the municipal register of Lugo di Romagna, in the province of Ravenna, from 1437. In the 19th century, many documents testify to its cultivation in the hills of Cesena, where it was used to make wines table. In 1900 its use was reduced, risking extinction. In 2000 it was found in two old rows of vines in Mercato Saraceno (Forlì), and the owner knew it was "Famoso". Today it is produced in small plots by a group of winemakers who are convinced that this vine possesses a series of aromas and biodiversity characteristics not to be missed.

FAMOSO TODAY…

The aromatic bouquet of this wine, considered excessive at the beginning of the 1900s, is today one of its strong points, together with its fullness and structure. It is excellent when paired with fish and fresh cheeses from Romagna such as Raviggiolo or Squacquerone.
