About Winery and Wines

As far back as civil records go, the Lateyron family lived in the Saint-Emilionnais. Both in the 18th century and in the 19th century, it was in Saint Georges that François, Jean and Yves Lateyron produced wine at Château Tour Calon, while the following generations of Paul, then Michel and Claude settled in the neighboring towns of Montagne and Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion. Today it is Corinne and Lionel Lateyron (children of Claude Lateyron) who work to perpetuate the spirit of the House by combining scientific knowledge with respect for tradition.

Jean Lateyron was at the origin of what constitutes the singularity of the family: “La prize de mousse” of Libournais wines. It is to brighten up the wine tastings that in a small cellar in Saint Georges at a place called “Troquart”, Abel frothed and aged his wines away from the light. He created his trading company in 1897. His son Paul Lateyron, mastering the so-called Champenoise technique, settled in Montagne and had Siméon Lacour dig a gallery in 1927 leading to the current cellars. Mayor of his Commune and President of the Wine Syndicate for 30 years, he contributed to the development of both its action in favor of the community and for the benefit of its vineyard. His eldest son, Michel worked for a few years with him, then it was Claude who took charge of the family business in a difficult context. Helped by his wife Nadine, he put the company and the vineyard back on the path to development. Corinne Lateyron, the oenologist, takes care of the technical part while Lionel Lateyron is dedicated to marketing.

Very large underground galleries overlooked by one of the highest vineyards in the Saint-Emilion area now constitute the heart of the heritage of Château Tour Calon. Because of this exceptional natural richness, the Lateyron family wanted to guarantee its longevity by being accredited by Ecocert for the Prize de Mousse in 1993 and for the vineyards in 2010.

Maison Lateyron is known for its sparkling wines AOC Crémant de Bordeaux made by traditional method.
