About Winery and Wines
Montechiaro Estate, owned by the Griccioli family since 1720, stands as a beacon of tradition and passion for winemaking, nestled atop a picturesque hill just 5 km from Siena, with breathtaking views of the Chianti region. With over 300 years of winemaking heritage, the estate focuses on cultivating Sangiovese and rare native grape varieties. Alessandro Griccioli, the eldest son, has infused new life into the family's vineyards, enhancing their centuries-old legacy. The estate's philosophy is deeply rooted in organic farming, ensuring that the vineyards, teeming with life, produce grapes that truly connect with the land. The winemaking process takes place in a historic nineteenth-century cellar, emphasizing the unique marine terroir of the Siena’s Colli Chianti DOCG. Organic farming here is more than a method; it's a commitment to achieving the highest quality grapes, resulting in wines that are a true expression of the land. Visitors to Montechiaro can explore the historic chapel of the villa and the original 1950 olive mill, now transformed into a shop and charming tasting room, all while experiencing the deep connection between humankind and nature that defines the estate’s sustainable approach to winemaking.
Montechiaro Estate offers a range of exceptional wines, crafted from organic grapes grown in six meticulously maintained vineyards planted between 1998 and 2012, on the rolling hills of Siena's Chianti region. The winery’s mission is to showcase the full potential of Sangiovese through projects such as ANNO DOMINI '345, which includes Chianti Colli Senesi, Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva, Rosé del Chianti, and Vinsanto del Chianti. The Supertuscan & Brunello project highlights the estate’s dedication to creating outstanding Supertuscan wines like “Primum Vinum” and the renowned Brunello di Montalcino, both made from 100% Sangiovese. The innovative Arteliquida project brings a modern twist with Supertuscan-style wines like Arteliquida Bianco, a blend of Trebbiano, Malvasia Bianca, Viognier, and Manzoni, and Arteliquida Rosso, a single-vineyard Malvasia Nera. The estate also produces Grappa Arteliquida, made entirely from Malvasia Nera. Complementing the wines, Montechiaro Estate offers a range of unique experiences, including truffle hunting, vineyard picnics, gourmet Tuscan dinners, horse riding, and wine tastings at the family’s medieval Castle of Monteriggioni. Each bottle of Montechiaro wine captures the essence of its terroir, offering a taste of the rich history and vibrant culture of the Chianti region.
