About Winery and Wines
Piercarlo Culasso is a small, family-run winery born from deep roots and long-standing traditions in the heart of Barbaresco. Although officially established in 2017, the family’s history in viticulture dates back to the early 19th century, with the first Barbaresco produced on the estate in 1920. Piercarlo’s father, Dante, carried on the family winemaking tradition until 1985, and in 2000, Piercarlo himself took over the vineyards, gaining hands-on experience and knowledge year after year.
With renewed passion, Piercarlo Culasso resumed winemaking in 2017, supported by his family. Today, the estate is run by Piercarlo and his daughter Martina, who together oversee every phase of the production process—from vineyard to bottle. Their work focuses especially on the vineyard, located in the renowned Faset sub-area, where the quality of the Nebbiolo grapes is paramount.
At Piercarlo Culasso, the philosophy is clear: respect the land, the vine, and the natural rhythms of winemaking. The family avoids chemical treatments, using only natural substances like copper and sulfur in the vineyard. In the cellar, wines are made with minimal intervention, allowing them to mature slowly and express the full character of their terroir. Every step is guided by precision, cleanliness, and attention to detail, ensuring the wines are technically perfect and free from defects, while remaining true to the elegance and authenticity of the Barbaresco region.
Piercarlo Culasso produces approximately 20,000 bottles per year, with the estate’s flagship wine being Barbaresco, made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes grown in the prestigious Faset cru, within the municipality of Barbaresco. Since 2020, the range has expanded to include Langhe Nebbiolo and a limited quantity of Barbera d’Alba Superiore, adding depth to the winery's traditional lineup.
The entire production—from vineyard to cellar—is rooted in the Faset cru. The winery, the family home, and all seven vineyard parcels are located within this historic zone. These plots are split between two distinct areas of the Faset cru, each with its own microclimate, allowing the family to produce two different expressions of Barbaresco, both reflecting the unique characteristics of this exceptional terroir.
The Faset cru is celebrated for its elegance and finesse, and Piercarlo Culasso wines aim to capture these qualities with precision. On the nose, the wines are intense and enveloping, offering aromas that are full and complex. On the palate, they are refined and balanced, structured but not overly tannic or astringent. The focus is on acidity, freshness, and harmony, allowing the natural beauty of the Nebbiolo grape to shine through while remaining faithful to the identity of this highly regarded Barbaresco subzone.
