About Winery and Wines

Welcome to Quinta da Estrada – A Historic Douro Valley Winery Since 1820

Located in the heart of the Douro Valley, Quinta da Estrada offers a peaceful and authentic escape surrounded by stunning vineyards and centuries of winemaking tradition. The estate is situated in the parish of Poiares, with its lands stretching across the nearby parishes of Abaças, Galafura, and Covelinhas.

Our main house dates back to 1820, with even older structures nearby, as confirmed by documents and findings discovered in 1970. The estate belonged to the Pinto Barreiros family and was passed down through generations to the current owners, who continue to honor the family’s rich heritage.

In earlier times, oxen-drawn carts transported wine from the estate. Scattered across the property are historic granite wine presses where wine was once made and stored in large chestnut barrels—many of which still remain as living memories of the labor and care that shaped this unique region.

Between the 1920s and 1950s, Quinta da Estrada was also a diversified farm, producing not only wine but also cereals, fruit, olive oil, and dairy. You’ll find remnants of that time on the property: a grain mill once powered by a strong ox, large wooden grain bins, and traditional wool blankets made from the sheep raised here.

We’ve always produced high-quality olive oil, with olive trees planted around the edges of the vineyards. During the cold winter months, aguardente (a traditional Portuguese spirit) was distilled in our copper still, which is now preserved as a historical piece.

In the mid-20th century, José António Lacerda modernized the vineyard operations, focusing fully on viticulture and wine production. Today, the estate is led by his son, José Agostinho Lacerda, and remains a founding member and shareholder of Lavradores de Feitoria, a prominent Douro wine collective.
