VIGNE CALARCO
About the Winery
Vigne Calarco is a living testimony to an unbreakable bond between family and land, between working hands and a heart that preserves memories.
Our cellar holds stories of family, of toil and patience, stone after stone, bottle after bottle. Each bunch of grapes tells the story of the past and is transformed under the watchful eye of those who listen to the land.
Today's hands follow the gestures of yesterday, intertwining knowledge and innovation with every harvest.
Vigne Calarco is the memory that breathes between hills and rows of vines, ready to become wine to be savored and shared.
This is where Vigne Calarco was born. Our history is rooted in the hilly plains of Sambatello, where the winds of the Strait caress the vines and the view stretches from the skyline of Mount Etna to the Aeolian Islands. Clay soils, shaped by millennia.
Since the early 1900s, our family, the Calarco family, has intertwined its life with these hills, becoming a constant and faithful guardian of a land that demands respect and restores memory. It all began when, at the dawn of the century, Carmelo Calarco and Pasqualina Araniti took over the management of the Trapani vineyards. As a young couple, they brought here dreams, strong hands, and the courage of those who decide to get involved.
A large family grew up in the historic farmhouse: twelve children, voices intertwined with the seasons, steps that learned early on the hardship and beauty of agricultural labor. They were difficult years, marked by wars and disasters, but no storm was strong enough to break the deep roots that kept them tied to the land.
Then came the postwar period, and with it the silence of the wounded fields. It was one of the youngest sons, Antonio, who gave a new voice to this land. Chosen by Senator Antonio Trapani Lombardo to manage his estate in that area, he became a guide and support for Sambatello in its most fragile moment.
Together with family and friends, he rebuilt devastated vineyards, rebuilt collapsed buildings, and brought life back to what the war had attempted to erase. His work was an act of love for the community and for the roots that had shaped him.
As the years passed, Antonio and his son Carmelo began to acquire plots of land, the farmhouse, and the ancient wine press. Piece by piece, stone by stone, they gave concrete form to a dream that was already written into the family's history: a farm born of continuity, loyalty to the land, and the humility of those who work in silence.
And it was during those years that Assunta, the young woman from Sardinia, arrived. A presence capable of transforming hardship into strength and work into sharing. She brought a smile that could lighten the hardest days, a kindness that needed no words, a discreet light that entered things without being asked.
Wife and mother, Carmelo's companion in life and work, Assunta became the silent heart of the Calarco family. Her wit lightened the burden of the seasons, her kindness was a safe haven for all. She lives on in the gestures passed down, in the sweetness she taught, in the strength that continues to guide our family.
Today, Vigne Calarco is the fruit of a dialogue between generations, where experience and passion meet every day between the rows. Maria Laura Calarco leads our company with the skills of an architect and agronomist, bringing innovation and respect for tradition.
Alongside her, Antonino Pardeo, a graduate in Economics, manages the administrative side with care and foresight, while Irinel Paduraru, a skilled worker, tends our vineyards with meticulous care, inheriting the dedication of those who have watched this land grow.
Carmelo Calarco, a chemical expert and the heart and soul of the company, continues to guide and pass on the knowledge of viticulture, supporting Maria Laura in decision-making moments and the most delicate decisions. Together, we form a team that combines expertise, passion, and memory, transforming each harvest into an act of love for the land and the wine.
Certified organic viticulture accompanies every phase of our work, from transplanting to harvesting, from bunch selection to winemaking. Every gesture is a measure of respect for the land and the history it carries. The grapes are tended by hand and with traditional tools, but also with modern techniques that respect the vineyard's natural balance.
The cellar, restored stone by stone by Maria Laura, preserves the memories of each generation and prepares wine for the future, so that each bottle is not just a product, but a testimony to our dialogue between past and present.
About the Wines
Among the grape varieties we cultivate, Alicante holds a special place in the heart of Vigne Calarco: a vigorous and resilient variety, introduced centuries ago and now a symbol of our commitment to interpreting the authentic character of this land. It is joined by Nerello Calabrese, with its profound elegance; Syrah, intense and enveloping; and Merlot, an international variety we have welcomed to our hills to enrich the structure of our red wines. For white wines, our vineyards offer Malvasia Bianca and Zibibbo, grapes that express freshness, aroma, and a luminosity that evokes the sea breeze and the light of sunsets.
Today, our vineyards, which extend over five hectares between gentle slopes and expanses shaped by time, naturally follow the contours of the land. Cultivation operations are a continuous dialogue between past and present: agricultural machinery for targeted cultivation alternates with manual gestures, custodians of a knowledge passed down through generations, so that every curve of the vines reflects care, balance, and patience.
