Villa Seara
(Winery in Vinho Verde, Basto)
About Winery and Wines
Villa Seara is a project that began in 2020 with the implementation of the first hectares of vines by Sofia and Martin. This Portuguese-Italian couple, Sofia and Martin, met in California, and after some oenological experiences in the Old and New World. They decided that it was in the small Minho village of Basto-São Clemente that they would fulfill their dream of producing their first wines.
As it is a project for life, this couple of (now called) farmers maintains three types of sustainability: social, through the sense of community and appreciation of customs; environmental, defending organic farming and the production of wines with low oenological intervention; as well as the economic aspect represented by additional investment in old houses for touristic purposes. Currently, the project has 6 hectares of vineyards located between 400-600 meters and influenced by an Atlantic breeze. The soils are mainly granitic and perfect for the varieties chosen, such as Arinto, Alvarinho, and Padeiro.
As winegrowers, the main focus is to deliver great fruit every year to produce the best "nectars". While their own winery is still under construction, Sofia and Martin show whoever visits them the hard work applied in the small village where they're located. A brief guided tour through the vineyards, with a complete description of the Basto region, the "terroir" and their agriculture philosophy, will be followed by a Villa Seara Tasting Experience.
At the moment, Villa Seara can present 3 wines:
Villa Seara Blend - White Wine made with three varietes from the Vinho Verde region - Arinto, Avesso, and Alvarinho. It ages in used oak barrels for more/less 10 months. Best paired with cheese and seafood.
Villa Seara Padeiro - Rosé Wine made with mainly Padeiro (de Basto). It stays in stainless steel in contact with the lees for 7 months for a better persistence. Best paired with tacos and oysters.
Villa Seara Padeiro - Red Wine made with 100% Padeiro (de Basto). After fermenting in small vats, it goes into used oak barrels for 16 months. Best paired with grilled sardines and pizza.
