What are the wines of Vesuvius?
Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio is the name to know. At Sorrentino the white is made from Caprettone, Greco and Falanghina, and the rosé and the red from Piedirosso and Aglianico. The sandy volcanic soil kept phylloxera away, so many vines here still grow on their own roots.
Why sleep on the slopes instead of coming for the day?
Because you can taste without driving back to Naples afterwards, and be at the crater path or the gates of Pompeii early in the morning. Pompeii, Oplontis and Herculaneum are nearby, and the trails to the Gran Cono, the crater, start in the park.
When is the best time to go?
Spring and autumn: summer afternoons are hot. The harvest usually runs from September into October. Naples is the nearest airport, and you will need a car or a taxi for the last stretch up to the estate.
