Cantina del Vesuvio Azienda Vinicola di Russo Maurizio

Winery in Vesuvius

About the Winery

Founded in 1948 by Giovanni Russo, Cantina del Vesuvio is a family-run winery located on the fertile, volcanic slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Established in the challenging years following World War II, the winery initially relied on traditional methods, transporting wine to Naples by horse-drawn wagon, where it was sold to local merchants. Over time, Giovanni's son, Maurizio, who began working in the vineyards as a young boy, decided to take the family business in a new direction. Eighteen years ago, Maurizio opened the doors of Cantina del Vesuvio to visitors, offering wine tastings and tours that showcase the unique terroir and rich history of the region.

The winery is nestled in one of Italy’s most iconic landscapes, where the volcanic soil and Mediterranean climate create ideal conditions for viticulture. Visitors to Cantina del Vesuvio can expect not only to taste exceptional wines but also to immerse themselves in the story of a family dedicated to their craft for generations. The breathtaking views of Mount Vesuvius and the surrounding countryside make this a must-visit destination for wine lovers and travelers alike.

About the Wines

Cantina del Vesuvio is renowned for its production of high-quality wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the volcanic soil from which they are born. Each wine is crafted with great care, showcasing the distinct flavors and aromas that have made the region famous.

Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio: The winery’s flagship wine, Lacryma Christi, is available in both red and white varieties. The red is made from Piedirosso and Aglianico grapes, offering a deep, rich flavor with notes of dark fruit and a touch of smokiness from the volcanic terroir. The white, made from Coda di Volpe and Falanghina, is fresh and aromatic, with hints of citrus and mineral notes that reflect the unique soil.

Lacryma Christi Rosato: This rosé version of Lacryma Christi is light and refreshing, with delicate strawberry and floral notes. It is perfect for enjoying on a warm day, embodying the vibrant spirit of the region.

Aglianico: Known for its bold and complex character, Cantina del Vesuvio’s Aglianico is a robust red wine with flavors of black cherry, plum, and a hint of spice. The tannins are well-structured, providing a long and satisfying finish.

Caprettone: A lesser-known native variety, Caprettone is used to produce a distinctive white wine that is crisp and balanced, with subtle floral and fruity notes. It is an excellent expression of the Vesuvian terroir.

Each bottle from Cantina del Vesuvio carries with it the legacy of the Russo family and the unique qualities of the volcanic landscape. These wines are not only a celebration of the region’s rich history but also a testament to the passion and dedication that have defined the winery for generations.

in a hurry..
Nice reception, then a short (very short) demonstration of the bottling machine.
Good food and wine, but the wines were presented very briefly, could get a little bit more love..
When we were in the dessert they asked how we were going to get out of there, we said taxi, then after a couple of minutes they came back and said the taxi will come in 10 minutes, it felt like they wanted to get rid of us, not so nice.
Summing up: good wines and good food, but the hosting was lousy. We will not return.
Try make your guests feel welcome!

A rather rush experience, leaving you with a full stomach at least
It was a second vineyard I visited at Vesuvio, and it was pretty average. The wine tour was a rush, not much detail was given unless we asked (pretty much this is the vineyard, this is the cellar and this is the machine that sticks the labels). There's hardly any explanations of the wines presented for tasting, other than the information on the bottles. Hardly further interaction on the feedback on the wines, or the food. The vineyard only produces 5 wines, only one is very good (the reserva), the others are OK, nothing unique to my taste. What impressed me most is the wine vinegar they produce, almost like Modena of the south, but again, it's only on asking that more information is produced. If you like a quick experience, this vineyard might be for you, But if you'd like to learn more about the wines, the wine-making process, the stories behind and more attentive culinary experiences, you might like to try another vineyard in the region.

Lunch in total relaxation.
I already knew the winery, and it was just a reconfirmation: an enchanting place on the slopes of Vesuvius.... I had lunch outside the establishment as I requested and it was a divine and 'of-wine' experience: everything was excellent and genuine, I felt pampered. Staff was kind, courteous, and knowledgeable, the wine of excellent quality, the lunch delicious. I will definitely be back.

A very pleasant surprise
A very nice discovery! The tour was scheduled in English but we were lucky enough to have a French-speaking guide, a thoughtful gesture for some in our group of 4 friends! A tour that starts in the rows of vines and ends on the rooftop with a full meal paced by the estate's wines.
Quality products as well as friendly service
Thank you for this warm welcome,
Nothing for the moment
