About Winery and Wines

Bonfiglio Winery, officially established in 1986, has deep roots that date back to the early 1900s when the Bonfiglio family began cultivating the lands of Briga. Originally focused on producing lemons, oranges, and olive oil, the family later transitioned to viticulture. In the early 2000s, the citrus groves were uprooted, the land was re-prepared, and vineyards were planted. The family also expanded by adding the property in Piano Cuturi (Giampilieri).

In 2015, the commercial name "Cantine Bonfiglio" was introduced, marking a new chapter in the winery’s journey, focusing on producing high-quality wines while staying true to their agricultural heritage.

The Bonfiglio Winery was completed in 2016, combining modern winemaking techniques with traditional methods to produce high-quality wines that reflect the richness of Sicily's land. The winery prioritizes respecting nature and its rhythms while embracing innovation in the winemaking process. Visitors to the winery can experience tastings in a unique setting, immersed in the vineyards and offering sensory experiences that allow them to appreciate the entire process of winemaking.

The winery’s vineyards, located in Contrada Gramino (Briga Marina) and Piano Cuturi (Giampilieri), cover 1.5 hectares of hilly terrain south of Messina. Contrada Gramino has a west/southwest exposure, while Piano Cuturi offers an east/southeast exposure with panoramic views of the Strait of Messina. The land is home to indigenous Sicilian varieties such as Nerello Mascalese, Nocera, Nerello Cappuccio, and Nero d’Avola.

The vineyard uses the spurred cordon training system, with approximately 5000 vines per hectare. Most of the vineyards are espalier-trained, except for a small, particularly difficult area where sapling cultivation is employed, requiring manual labor. This careful combination of tradition, modern techniques, and respect for the land allows the winery to produce wines that offer a rich and distinctive taste of the territory.
