(Winery in Languedoc-Roussillon, Terrasses du Larzac)
About Winery and Wines
Nestled within 60 hectares of exceptional terroir at the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, Château Capion is an emerging star in the Languedoc wine scene. The estate is dedicated to organic practices, achieving organic certification in 2020, and employs a meticulous approach to winemaking. Under the guidance of esteemed oenologist Claude Gros and renowned soil specialist Claude Bourguignon, Château Capion has embraced micro-plot selection, hand harvesting, and advanced winemaking techniques. This dedication to excellence has resulted in powerful and complex reds, as well as subtle and beautifully balanced whites.
Château Capion has quickly garnered critical acclaim, including a historic 98-point score at the Decanter World Wine Awards for a Languedoc white, and 96 points from Wine Advocate for its top red cuvée. Visitors to Château Capion can expect to experience the harmony of tradition and innovation, set against the stunning backdrop of the Gassac valley.
Château Capion, located between Saint-Guilhem le Désert and Aniane in the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, is recognized as a leading estate in Languedoc’s winemaking renaissance. The vineyard spans over 77 hectares in the Gassac valley, characterized by diverse soils including limestone, sandstone, clay, pebbles, and silt. This diversity, meticulously mapped and studied by soil expert Claude Bourguignon, has allowed the estate to tailor its viticulture practices to each unique plot, enhancing the expression of terroir in every bottle.
The estate's collaboration with winemaker Claude Gros has introduced a micro-plot production method, where grapes from each plot are harvested and vinified separately to preserve and enhance the specific characteristics of each varietal. The result is a range of wines that are deeply rooted in their terroir, embodying the estate’s commitment to quality and provenance.
Château Capion is committed to environmental sustainability, with organic certification achieved in 2020. The vineyard work, including disbudding, trellising, and harvesting, is done entirely by hand, reflecting a deep respect for the land. This dedication is reflected in the estate’s wines, which have received high praise from both consumers and critics. The estate’s reds, labeled AOP Terrasses du Larzac, are known for their power, complexity, and voluptuousness, while the whites, labeled AOP Languedoc, are celebrated for their subtlety and balance. Both red and white wines from Château Capion are crafted with aging potential, making them a testament to the estate’s pursuit of excellence.
