Medici Ermete

Winery in Lambrusco, Food Valley

About the Winery

Founded in 1890 by Remigio Medici, Medici Ermete is a historic winery with roots along the Via Emilia, a vital commercial road in Reggio Emilia. Remigio, who owned three successful taverns, established the winery to capitalize on the family vineyards located between the Via Emilia and the foothills of the Enza Valley. His son, Ermete, expanded the business, cementing the winery's reputation, and passed the legacy to his sons, Valter and Giorgio, who propelled the brand onto the global stage. The 1970s saw a "Lambrusco boom" in the United States, making it one of the first Italian wines to achieve international acclaim. However, the 1980s brought challenges with an influx of low-quality, mass-produced Lambrusco that tarnished the wine’s reputation. In 1988, the fourth generation—Alberto, Pierluigi, and later Alessandra—joined the company and spearheaded a revolution in Lambrusco production. They replanted the vineyards, reducing yields by 35% to focus on quality, a move that led to the creation of the "Concerto" in 1993, a CRU of Lambrusco Salamino. Today, Medici Ermete stands as a beacon of excellence, blending tradition with innovation, and offering visitors a chance to explore the rich history and evolving future of Lambrusco in the heart of Emilia-Romagna.

About the Wines

Medici Ermete’s commitment to quality and tradition is evident in their 80 hectares of organically farmed vineyards, located in the most prestigious wine-growing areas of Emilia-Romagna. Now managed by the fifth generation, represented by Alessandro Medici, the winery has perfected the art of Lambrusco production, creating wines that truly express the character of their terroir. The family's revolutionary approach includes a rigorous selection of grapes, with yields 30-40% lower than DOC regulations, ensuring exceptional quality in every bottle. The vinification process, carried out in state-of-the-art facilities, respects both nature and the environment, resulting in wines that have garnered international acclaim and prestigious awards.

Among their standout offerings is the Concerto, a CRU of Lambrusco Salamino, known for its rich flavor and fine bubbles, embodying the perfect balance between tradition and modern winemaking techniques. Medici Ermete’s portfolio also includes a range of Lambrusco wines, from the dry and refreshing to the more full-bodied and complex, each crafted with the same dedication to quality. These wines, once overlooked, have now entered the temple of excellence, proving that Lambrusco can be a sophisticated and elegant expression of Italian winemaking. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or a curious traveler, Medici Ermete's wines offer a true taste of the passion and innovation that define this historic winery.

Totally worth it!
We loved learning from Alessandra about her family's passions for Traditional Balsamic Vinegar and all of their amazing Lambrusco wines. The family batterie of vinegars were so rich of tradition, it makes you want to start your own! Truly memorable experience we'll cherish forever!
Everything we had was simply terrific and refreshing. We especially loved the Phermento, Gran Concerto, Concerto, and the Quercioli Reggiano Dry wines.

Exceptional experience
Upon arriving at the estate we were immediately welcomed by one of the owners who entrusted us to her colleague. With her we first went to discover the “wonderful world” of balsamic vinegar and then she accompanied us in a delicious tasting of their wines and vinegar. The girl was extremely friendly, always ready to answer a thousand questions with a smile and very knowledgeable.
You can see that they are very well organized, it was an exceptional experience.

Amazing balsamic and wine tasting
We had lovely time at the tasting. The owner was so sweet and passionate about the products. First we walked through the balsamic vinegar rooms and then we moved to inside where the tasting was. She offered us finger food. Balsamic vinegar and wines were really good. After the tasting we had opportunity to buy their products. We also got to walk in the vineyard.

Generations of Balsamic and Wine
This tour was such a highlight from our trip! Although it started out with us getting lost (because I did not read the very clear WhatsApp message), the owner was a very helpful and gracious host as she shared about her family’s generations of aging balsamic and making wine. We did the tour on a Tuesday and it was only us. It was such a unique and intimate experience. Everything was delicious so too, we had to bring some of both back home! You will absolutely love it, just make sure to read the WhatsApp message!

A wonderful discovery
The Ermete Medici estate in the Reggio Emilia countryside was a wonderful discovery. Alessandra welcomed us with kindness and professionalism; she told us the story of her family's passion for wine and vinegar for five generations and she intoxicated us with a tasting of three excellent Lambrusco wines and three wonderful traditional balsamic vinegars from Reggio Emilia. Congratulations and thank you!

Scents and colors of autumn in the magical acetaia
Warmly welcomed by Alessandra, our guide, smiling and knowledgeable. She led us through a mini journey made of sacrifices, professionalism, attention and care, a passion for wine but not only... the atmosphere in the acetaia was magical: a true treasure chest.
We were able to taste 3 wines of our choice, which were also well-explained.
An experience to try, perhaps before evening falls, to admire the splendid autumn colors that are intoxicating in every sense.
Perhaps accompany the tasting with small samples of typical Reggio Emilia specialties: they would better enhance the pairings and would certainly gratify the palate as well
