Piccolo Bacco dei Quaroni

Winery in Oltrepò Pavese

About the Winery

Piccolo Bacco dei Quaroni is located on the first hill of the Oltrepò Pavese in Montù Beccaria, a region renowned for producing quality wine. Covering about 10 hectares of organically cultivated land, the estate focuses primarily on Pinot Noir, alongside varieties like Croatina, Barbera, Moradella, and Riesling. As a pioneer in the natural wine movement, the farm has been part of the circuit for over a decade and was one of the founding members of FIVI, the Italian Federation of Independent Winemakers.

In 2008, a family-run agritourism facility was added, offering approximately 40 seats, and in 2023, the winery and agritourism underwent a complete renovation, including the addition of three overnight stay rooms.

At the heart of the farm is a family deeply dedicated to their craft. Tommaso, an oenologist with a passion for wine, has managed the vineyards and cellar since his university years and became the owner in 2017. Sara, also an oenologist, handles hospitality and communication and is becoming increasingly involved in cellar operations. Laura and Mario, both agronomists, took over the farm in 2001, bringing a wealth of experience in Pinot Noir production. Today, they support the new generation, with Mario working in the cellar and Laura in the kitchen. Giulia brings an international perspective, contributing to various aspects of the business.

About the Wines

Piccolo Bacco dei Quaroni's vineyards cover ten hectares of land, divided into four distinct areas, each serving a specific purpose for wine production:

La Fiocca: A closed, north-facing valley surrounded by woods. This area cultivates Pinot Noir for both sparkling and red wine, along with Riesling Renano on its calcareous soil. The valley's name, "La Fiocca," means "it snows," and its day-night temperature variation makes it ideal for these varieties.
Fornacione: An open, warm valley. The eastern side is dedicated to Croatina, used for Bonarda Frizzante, while the western side grows Barbera for Ancestral wine. The name "Fornacione" comes from its history of clay pot production.
Campasso: A slope-side vineyard where Moradella, a late-ripening native variety, thrives, producing the estate’s MOREe wine.
Casa Padrone: Located in Castana, this over-30-year-old vineyard is dedicated to Buttafuoco DOC, using Croatina, Barbera, Uva rara, and Vespolina.

The winery produces nine wines:

- PBQ: Sparkling wine Metodo Classico Brut nature, 100% Pinot Noir. The name PBQ originates from "Piccolo Bacco dei Quaroni," as it is the flagship product of the company.
- CRETE: Pinot Nero Provincia di Pavia IGT, a sparkling wine vinified in white. The name comes from the type of soil where it originates, predominantly limestone.
- SIRE: Riesling Provincia di Pavia IGT, 100% still Riesling Renano. The name Sire emphasizes the importance of this grape variety, identifying it as the "King" of white wines.
- LA FIOCCA: Pinot Nero Provincia di Pavia IGT, vinified as a red wine. The name comes from the vineyard "La Fiocca" where it is produced.
- BUTTAFUOCO: Buttafuoco DOC Vigneto Cà Padroni; aged red wine. "Buttafuoco" is a blend of 4 grapes, named after the small DOC of the Valle Versa.
- BUTTAFUOCO STORICO: Buttafuoco DOC Vigna Cà Padroni; aged red wine. This wine comes from the small DOC located between the Valle Versa and the Valle Scuropasso, the area where the Consortium of the Historical Buttafuoco Club originates.
- IL MOREE: Red wine Provincia di Pavia IGT. The name is inspired by the Moradella grape, an indigenous and rediscovered grape variety in our area.
- MONS ACUTUS: Bonarda dell'Oltrepo Pavese DOC frizzante. 100% Croatina. "Mons acutus" derives from the ancient name of the Montù Beccaria mountain.
- LA POSA: Rosé wine from Provincia di Pavia IGT, frizzante. 100% Ancestral Barbera. The name Posa identifies the slow settling of yeast following fermentation.

Lovely evening
Truly a beautiful place, very good wine. The only thing, I was perhaps expecting some water between the various glasses, and maybe for the glasses to be changed at least between the white and the red. For the rest, everything was fantastic.

Organic and natural wines
Very nice experience, I didn't expect such high quality in the wines produced by this winery.

Really very good organic and natural wines. They have quite a selection of different kinds of Rosé, Whites and Reds.

We left with a really good Pinot Nero (white), a Pinot Nero (red) yet to be tasted and a 2015 Buttafuoco that was really good, but decidedly more challenging than the others.

Picnic in the vineyard
The experience was wonderful! We were welcomed with kindness and we found the backpack ready with homemade dishes. Besides the bottle of wine (excellent, produced by them), there were salami sandwiches, a savory tart with wild herbs, a zucchini flatbread, and the plum crostata (exquisite!). In short, delicious food and a beautiful atmosphere!
You get to the spot by walking through the vineyards and the view of the hills is breathtaking!
