Winery in Hills of Bologna, Food Valley

About the Winery

Marmocchia Winery spans 23 hectares, with 14 hectares dedicated to vineyards in the Ghiaia stream valley, nestled in the hills of Bologna. This area is steeped in tradition and known for its typical products. The winery maintains a family-run, artisanal approach, respecting the rhythms of nature while also incorporating innovative techniques in both the vineyard and the cellar as part of its organic production philosophy.

The first historical mention of the farm dates back to 1630, during the time of the plague in the Bologna area. The company takes its name from the Marmocchi family, who survived the epidemic. Managed by the Montaguti family since the mid-19th century, the winery is now in its sixth generation. In the 1980s, the family decided to specialize in the production and marketing of wines. Today, Alberto, the current owner, continues this tradition, applying the knowledge inherited from his father alongside modern studies to oversee all technical operations in both the vineyard and the cellar.

Tastings at the winery offer a sensory journey, beginning with a walk through the vineyard, where the history of the estate and its path to becoming organic is shared. In the cellar, guests can follow the process from grape to wine. Tastings can be enjoyed in the store, garden, or terrace overlooking the valley. Local delicacies such as Mora Romagnola salami, Parmigiano Reggiano from mountain pastures, and wine jelly made from Pignoletto Superiore DOCG Colli Bolognesi are served alongside the wines.

Engaging, comprehensive and cheerful
The winery is easily accessible. The owner was very welcoming from the moment we arrived. I find that the strengths of this experience were the energy and engagement shown in telling and explaining the work and philosophy that guides this company, truly never boring and, on the contrary, stimulating. We then did a deep-dive session (the one about the soil), which was truly dynamic and original, I wasn't expecting it. The tour concluded with a tasting of three excellent wines, accompanied by a few small food samples but above all by a convivial and cheerful atmosphere that was created during the visit. I truly recommend it!
I recommend adding at least one of the proposed deep-dive sessions to the "basic" experience, none of the other wineries I have visited offer something similar.
