Tenuta Mattei
About the Winery
Tenuta Mattei is a historic winery nestled in the scenic hills of the Marche region, near Ancona. This family-run estate has deep roots in the area, with a winemaking tradition that dates back to the early 20th century. The story of Tenuta Mattei began when Danilo's grandfather started cultivating vineyards and fields on his property, initially selling the grape harvest to local wineries. In the late 1950s, Danilo's father, Mario, alongside his wife Maria, expanded the vineyard area and began producing and selling wine directly, first in the local market and then throughout Italy.
Today, Tenuta Mattei spans 100 hectares of vineyards, including prestigious grape varieties such as Verdicchio, Lacrima, Montepulciano, Sangiovese, and Merlot. The winery produces approximately 1,150,000 bottles of wine each year, a testament to its significant presence in the Italian wine industry. The estate's location, between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountains, offers a unique terroir that greatly influences the quality and character of its wines. Visitors to Tenuta Mattei can immerse themselves in the rich history and tradition of Marches winemaking, experiencing firsthand the passion and dedication that have defined this family estate for generations.
About the Wines
Tenuta Mattei’s wines are a true expression of the Marche region's unique terroir. The vineyards are planted in clay-rich soils of marine-alluvial origin, which are abundant in water and minerals, creating ideal conditions for grape cultivation. The estate’s portfolio is diverse, with a strong emphasis on indigenous varieties like Verdicchio, Lacrima, and Montepulciano, alongside classic grapes like Sangiovese and Merlot.
Verdicchio, a flagship grape of the region, has a storied history that dates back to ancient times, with its origins likely linked to Venetian settlers who brought the vine to Marche. This variety is prized for its versatility and ability to produce wines that range from fresh and crisp to complex and age-worthy. Lacrima, another indigenous variety, yields wines that are aromatic and vibrant, with a distinctive floral character. Montepulciano and Sangiovese, both robust red varieties, thrive in the region’s climate, producing wines that are rich, full-bodied, and perfect for aging.
The estate's wines reflect a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, with each bottle capturing the essence of the land from which it comes. Whether it's the elegant and refined Verdicchio or the bold and expressive Montepulciano, Tenuta Mattei’s wines offer a true taste of the Marche, embodying the passion and expertise of the Mattei family.

Tasteful experience
After that down to the cellar to see the silos in which the grapes mature.
Danilo let us taste 3 stadium of wine making. Insightful.
Then back upstairs to find a table with 5 glasses, water and gran pardano with bread.
The wines were, to be completely honest, very good and totally different from each other.
Danilo was a great host.
Of course we bought some bottles of wine, took a few pictures of the vineyard with exceptional view and went on our way to visit the village.
Great afternoon!

Wonderful
We concluded the experience by tasting the 5 glasses of wine. We loved all the types, pairing them with the local food, which was also delicious. Furthermore, not to be underestimated, he welcomed our medium-sized little dog without any problem.
