Vigna di Pettineo

Winery in Val di Noto

About the Winery

Vigna di Pettineo is situated in the heart of the ‘Classic’ production area of Cerasuolo di Vittoria D.O.C.G., embodying a rich family tradition of winemaking led by Massimo Maggio, an experienced wine entrepreneur with a deep passion for the terroir of the Ibleo region. Pettineo was once a small rural village where farmers lived closely connected to their vineyards, and Massimo seeks to revive this intimate relationship with the land through organic farming practices. The estate spans 25 hectares, with 20 hectares dedicated to the cultivation of Nero d’Avola and Frappato using the traditional alberate training system. Nestled among ancient olive groves and citrus trees, Vigna di Pettineo is a place where history, tradition, and nature come together to create wines that are a true reflection of the land and its people.

About the Wines

At Vigna di Pettineo, we are committed to producing wines that honor the terroir of the Ibleo region. Our vineyards thrive on red, sandy soils that rest on a limestone base, providing ideal conditions for Nero d’Avola and Frappato grapes. The unique soil composition and organic farming methods create a natural system of biodiversity, ensuring that each wine expresses the distinctive characteristics of the land. Our Cerasuolo di Vittoria D.O.C.G. wines capture the essence of these ancient soils and the care that goes into every step of the winemaking process. With the old winery located at the center of the vineyards, we continue the tradition of crafting wines with strong ties to the land, offering a true taste of Sicily’s rich winemaking heritage.

A surprising tasting
Under the scorching August sun, we found ourselves in the middle of vineyards rich in history. Davide skillfully explained the farm's philosophy, based on the biological ecosystem of plants and animals. We tasted the wines in an ancient masseria from 1637, expertly restored. The first wine was a fruity white, called Grillo, which pairs well with appetizers. The second wine was a Frappato, pleasant on the palate. But the wines that most delighted the palate were the Cerasuolo di Vittoria and the Nero d’Avola.
A must-do experience for wine lovers. Great professionalism from Davide and excellent quality of the wines.
