"Essence" escape: One night at Al Piglio Wine Resort
Here is what's in store for you
Spend one night at Al Piglio Wine Resort Maison de Charme, in the countryside of Piglio in the heart of Ciociaria, the historic home of Cesanese del Piglio DOCG. Set between vineyards and olive groves, the estate is around one hour from Rome by car, with Anagni and Fiuggi both within easy reach, offering an introduction to one of Lazio’s lesser-known wine territories.
Al Piglio belongs to the same family behind Serradenari in La Morra, Piedmont, creating an unusual connection between the Cesanese hills of Lazio and the Langhe. Your stay includes one night with breakfast in one of the estate’s rooms, each with independent access and surrounded by the vineyards and olive trees of the property.
Wine is at the centre of your stay. Guided by the Hospitality Manager, you take part in a tasting of 4 wines held in the Tasting Room or Garden, according to the season and weather conditions. The flight connects the family’s work in Lazio with its winemaking roots in Piedmont.
You begin with the two estate whites, Cunctator and Illuminato. Illuminato is an unusual white expression inspired by lesser-known grape varieties from Central Italy, offering a different introduction to the estate before moving into its red-wine identity. The tasting then continues with Jan Negri Piglio, Cesanese del Piglio DOCG, produced from the grape that defines this corner of Ciociaria.
The final glass is a Langhe Nebbiolo from the family’s Piedmontese production. Rather than being an unrelated addition to the tasting, it completes the story of the estate by connecting Piglio with Serradenari in La Morra, allowing you to taste two very different wine landscapes through the work of the same family.
The services included with your stay change according to the season. From May to September, you can enjoy the outdoor swimming pool, outdoor jacuzzi and fitness area.
During the cooler season, the package includes a 2-hour Agri Wellness experience in the estate’s olive grove. The circuit features two whirlpool tubs with energising and relaxing aromatherapy, a Lithuanian barrel sauna, and the Winter Garden, a relaxation area where herbal teas, dried fruit and house-made biscuits are served. The outdoor fitness equipment also remains available.
The following morning, breakfast includes yogurt with granola, homemade cakes, fresh seasonal fruit and coffee before departure.
Outside the included experiences, you have time to explore Ciociaria independently. Anagni, with its medieval historic centre, is around 20 minutes away, while Fiuggi is also nearby. You can also remain at the resort, enjoy the countryside and, if you wish, dine at the estate’s Terra restaurant.
One thing I would still fix before publishing: the supplier information currently places May in both seasonal periods. I would confirm whether May follows the summer services or the Agri Wellness setup, then make the dates fully consistent.
