Winery stays in Campania: Vesuvius and Irpinia

The 4 wine holidays on this page are in two very different wine areas: the slopes of Vesuvius, a short drive from Pompeii, and Irpinia, the hills inland around Avellino. Three are at the same estate on Vesuvius; the fourth is a two-day trip to two wineries in Irpinia.

Where can you stay at a winery on Vesuvius?

At Vesuvio Inn, the Sorrentino family's farmhouse at Boscotrecase, among vineyards and olive groves inside the Vesuvius National Park. There are three ways to stay:

• Essence, one night: breakfast and a tasting of 3 Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio DOC Superiore wines, a white, a rosé and a red.
• Cru, one night: two winery visits, at Sorrentino Vini and at Bosco de' Medici in Pompeii, 9 volcanic wines in all, each tasting with a meal of local food.
• Essence weekend, two nights: a vineyard visit and a four-course lunch with 4 organic wines at Sorrentino Vini, and free time for Pompeii or the crater.

Can you stay among the vineyards of Irpinia?

Yes, with the Wine Full Immersion in Irpinia: a night in the hills around Avellino, visits to two wineries with the producers, and dinner with wine at a local restaurant. Irpinia is known for three DOCG wines: the red Taurasi and the whites Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. Transport is not included.

Can you combine a winery stay with Pompeii?

Easily, from Vesuvio Inn: Pompeii, Oplontis and Herculaneum are nearby, and the trails to the Gran Cono, the crater of Vesuvius, start in the national park. Book the crater path in advance, and in summer plan the ruins for the morning, as the afternoons are hot.

When is the best time to go?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. The harvest runs from September on Vesuvius to late October or November in Irpinia, where Aglianico ripens late. Naples is the nearest airport, and you will need a car or a taxi for the last stretch to the estates.
