(Winery in Araba / Álava)

Casa de la Primicia (XI century) is the oldest building of Laguardia village, the capital of Rioja Alavesa. From the beginning of the 15th century, here the church collected the Tithes and First offerings, farming taxes.
The sons of Julian Madrid continue the legacy and increase it in the surroundings of the Laguardia village, without forgetting the roots, restoring the old and historic cellar, a small jewel in the heart of the people. Today, Julian Madrid’s grandchildren honour him by carrying on the values he established at the vineyard. Casa Primicia is a magic place, a temple of wine. Its well-preserved cellars are silent witnesses to other periods and other people, and its restoration is the homage from the family to the dream of that vine grower from Laguardia called Julian Madrid.
Bodegas Izadi
(Winery in Araba / Álava)
Provides 2 wine tastings and winery visit from €35.00
Bodegas Izadi nace en 1987 de la mano de Gonzalo Antón, quien, junto a un conjunto de amigos y empresarios vitorianos, crea un proyecto innovador en el corazón de Rioja Alavesa.
Villabuena de Álava, where part of the family was already linked to the world of viticulture, was the chosen village to build an innovative winery focused on producing high-quality wines. Gonzalo Antón's vast knowledge of hospitality and catering led him to conceive a wine, Izadi, which soon became one of the most appreciated in the gastronomic world. At the same time, the incorporation of new winemaking techniques and his constant drive for improvement helped create a unique style that has been consolidated over time.
In the year 2000, the incorporation of his son, Lalo Antón, into the business boosted international sales and led to the company's expansion. Under the name Artevino, the company took on new projects, including Finca Villacreces (D.O. Ribera del Duero), Bodegas Vetus (D.O. Toro), and Orben (D.O.Ca. Rioja).
The commitment to quality, the connection to gastronomy, and the deep attachment to the land are the foundational pillars of Bodegas Izadi.
Txakoli Garate
(Winery in Araba / Álava)
Provides 1 wine tasting and winery visit from €35.00
The tradition of making txakoli in our family goes back four generations, beginning with humble production for family use and passing pilgrims crossing the Garate pass.
The journey toward professional winemaking began with Josu Egoitz Zubiaur, who left behind his career as a trained chef to follow his roots and dedicate himself entirely to the vineyard. Today, in a small winery nestled among our own vineyards, we craft txakoli and vermouth with the same respect and passion that guided our ancestors.
Our 4 hectares of vineyards are cultivated mainly with Hondarrabi Zuri, along with Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratia and Riesling, all farmed using organic practices. We avoid chemical treatments to protect both the vines and the soil. The grape handling is almost entirely manual, allowing us to give the utmost care to the fruit and ensure a wine of exceptional quality.
Bodegas Vallobera
(Winery in Araba / Álava)
Provides 1 wine tasting and winery visit from €30.00
Bodegas Vallobera is the result of all the love, hard work, patience, and courage put together in a personal dream of creating absolutely unique wines. The project of Bodegas Vallobera was started over twenty-five years ago in 1992 by Javier San Pedro Randez, descendent of vine grower. Javier along with Ana Ortega gave the wings to their family winery whose dream was to achieve and distribute quality wine. Thus, Javier was the first one in the San Pedro family to bottle the wines made with the family’s tradition. The first batch of wines that were commercialized was made in the classic Rioja Alavesa way but from 1994, the winery started aging around 100 casks of their first vintages.
The vineyards of Bodegas Vallobera lie nearly exclusively in the Rioja Alavesa subzone, in the shade of the Sierra de Cantabria, which shelters them from the ravages of northern storms. The vines are at an altitude from 500 to 700 meters above sea level and seek a higher quality of grapes than quantity. The main grape varieties grown in the Vallobera vines are Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha, Viura, Malvasia, Sauvignon Blanc. Vallobera is well represented with its famous wines that have earned them recognition all over the world with prestigious awards and accolades.

Bodegas Valdemar
(Winery in Araba / Álava)
An underground stone cellar, in Oyón: that's where more than 125 years of history started. Joaquín Martínez Bujanda built it to age the wines that he made from his vineyards. Because, from day one, our family's passion have always started from the same place, the land and the vineyard itself. This has been our path, our work, what interests us, what moves us: offering something personal, different, with a unique character. Breaking the moulds to find new ways to always be ourselves. The next step came from Marcelino, Jesús' son, building a new underground cellar in the high part of the village. The next generation, led by Jesús Martínez Bujanda, started the expansion phase, the first experiences ageing the wines in Bordeaux barrels. But above all, Jesús consolidated one of our trademark signs: the search for quality wines, different lands which serve to nurture unique wines. Following this philosophy, focusing on the vineyard and producing wines which faithfully express the land, the third and fourth generation, Jesús Martínez Bujanda, started the Conde Valdemar project, building one of the most modern and technologically advanced cellars of its time. The cellar also brought together tradition and innovation. The cellar is a pioneer in wines that broke the mould (whites fermented in barrels or garnacha monovarietal wines) and specialises in Grand Reserves. Conde Valdemar created new trends and also wines that surpass the trends.
Finca Valpiedra
(Winery in Araba / Álava)
Familia Martínez Bujanda is one of the historic wine making families in Rioja. Our great grandfather, Joaquin, wine grower, founded the winery in 1889 and since then we are also wine makers. The wine is born on the vine and growing our vineyards makes us responsible from the beginning to the end of our different elaborations in Rioja, Rueda and La Mancha.
For generations, we have explored the best plots and concentrated the vineyards in estates with their own identity, from which we produce wines with the personality of the countryside and with the concept that Familia Martínez Bujanda transmits to their elaborations: elegant, subtle and fresh wines, that last beyond the trends, and that aspire to get the very best from our different terroirs.
Familia Martínez Bujanda believes in the daily efforts and dedication, which explains today, that the fourth and fifth generations continue at the front of a more than 125 year project. An effort that, year after year, we demand from our vineyards; some of which are planted in extreme growing areas, in hard and stony soils where plants have to work every vintage to offer the best fruit with the identity of each landscape from which they are a part of.
Because, for us, nature prescribes what the vineyards require and if we have learned anything during these more than 125 years, it is to take care of them, to pamper them, for this is the main guarantee of the future of our vineyards, thus for Familia Martínez Bujanda.

History
After 7 generations of the family linked to the world of wine, in 1978 Teodoro Unzalu and María Felisa Gaztelurrutia built their first winery in Villabuena (Rioja Alavesa).
In 2006, their children, the 9th generation of the family, saw the rebirth of the original dream of their parents, fruit from the labour, and the spirit of overcoming: the building of the current winery in Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa). Built underground beside the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range, the winery is located at an altitude of 690 metros and surrounded by a vineyard of 57 hectares.
Three siblings, Iker, Unax and Usuri currently manage the winery.
The 57 hectares of vineyards tended by the winery are the best guarantee of the quality of the wines.
The important acknowledgements obtained both nationally and internationally are a sign that the winery is moving in the right direction.

The current facilities, built over 30 years ago, are in the vicinity of the town and preserve the essence of that original experience.

In addition, the winery, which is over 200 years old, is one of the oldest, and has some impressive underground cellars that are well worth a visit.
The current owners, María and Cristina, are sisters and are the 5th generation of the family to run the winery. They became the youngest winemakers in Spain in 1999 at only 17 and 18 years of age.

Bodega El Fabulista
(Winery in Araba / Álava)
The “El Fabulista” cellar is located in the heart Rioja D.O. in Laguardia, a medieval village surrounded by vineyards and with a rich cultural heritage. Buried seven meters deep, under a seventeenth century palace, the cellar and its wines are named after one of the most prestigious residents of the palace: the fabulist Felix Maria Serfin Sanchez de Samaniego. His fables continue to resonate within the walls of this medieval cave. This medieval underground winery has been adapted to allow the access of visitors any day of the week. The tour begins with the history of the winery and is supplemented by an entertaining explanation of the winemaking process. The tour takes visitors into the basement of the Samaniego palace and covers the differents levels of the cellar, until reaching the three main and parallel drafts that make up the winery, one for processing, another for aging and the last for the tasting of our wines. The “El Fabulista” is one of only two wineries that is still making its wine within the walled city of Laguardia. In this historic cellar the wine is made using traditional methods, with grapes from our own vineyards and grape-treading in the traditional manner. This results in wines with bright and lively colours, fine aroma and very agreeable taste. The visitors will know the origin of the caves and the process of winemaking by the traditional system of carbonic maceration. The “El Fabulista” is not only a large and spectacular historic cellar of the charming town of Laguardia, it is the one in which wine is still made in a natural and artisanal way and where the visitors are invited to participate by stepping on the grape as it used to be.
