Over the past thousand years, the castle has withstood numerous battles, from the medieval conflicts, notably the Battle of Montaperti in 1260, to the Second World War, losing parts of its structure and the surrounding homes.

FATTORIA DI MONTEMAGGIO
(Winery in Radda in Chianti)
Provides 4 wine tastings and winery visit from €20.60
Fattoria di Montemaggio is a small family-run organic estate in the heart of the Chianti Classico area in Tuscany. It is situated where once a 14th-century tower stood above the old Roman road between Siena and Florence in Italy. Montemaggio also is featured on a map, dating back to 1560, of the “Captains of the Guelph Party” that is housed in the Podesteria di Radda (City Hall).
The name Montemaggio derives from “Monte Maggiore” (Big Mountain), which indicates its elevated position. The estate, which is a member of the Consortium of Chianti Classico, extends over an area of 70 hectares (about 190 acres) of vineyards, olive groves, and woods; it is situated at a high altitude of 450 to 600 meters above the sea level. The vineyards have a central position in the estate with an exposure to the southwest of remarkable importance. The soil is rich in galestro, sandstone, and alberese.
The main grape varieties in the estate's vineyards are Sangiovese, with small additions of Merlot, Pugnitello, Chardonnay, Malvasia Nera, and Ciliegiolo. The particular position of the estate combined with the micro-climate, makes it possible for Montemaggio to offer a wide variety of products. We follow the concept of a very high-quality “Terroir” wine. We have a chance to look at the quality of wine in every bottle and make sure that the customer gets a very special product. The wines have been planted with a very high density per hectare (6250 plants/hectare in some vineyards). We then produce a lower quantity of grapes per hectare (35-60 Ql/hectare, depending on the vintage), by regulating it through pruning and selection techniques.
The mission of Montemaggio is to produce very high-quality wines, which are highly connected to the land where they are produced. The estate's wines are a 100% hand-made special product that you will recognize as soon as you open the bottle.

Tenuta Campomaggio
(Winery in Radda in Chianti)
Tenuta Campomaggio is situated in the Municipality of Radda in Chianti (Siena), atop a hill where the village of Campomaggio and its 18th-century manor house stand proudly. This area, renowned worldwide for Chianti Classico, is celebrated for its exceptional wine-producing conditions.
Under the leadership of Cecilia and Tommaso Castellani, the estate has embraced a fresh perspective, innovative approach, and determined attitude. Since 2016, they have conducted a thorough evaluation of the estate's land and implemented plot-specific vinification methods. This intricate process has unveiled the estate's considerable potential, positioning it to showcase the true greatness of its terroir. Additionally, the Castellanis have expanded their enological consultancy and are undertaking a cellar renovation.
The historic vineyards, originally spanning just over 25 hectares, have been progressively replanted since the Castellani family acquired the property in 1990. New vineyards have been added over the years, increasing the total vineyard area to 32 hectares. A significant planting of Sangiovese, totaling 3.5 hectares, was completed in spring 2021.
The vineyards lie at altitudes ranging from 280 to 480 meters above sea level. The soil, a medium-textured, chalky-clay mix rich in rock fragments (galestro and alberese), provides excellent drainage and water retention, allowing vines to develop deep roots. The cooler temperatures, especially in spring, slow vegetative growth, resulting in smaller, more concentrated bunches that ripen slowly. The significant temperature fluctuations during summer, particularly at higher elevations (300-350 meters), enhance grape ripening, improving phenolic content and aromatic qualities.
The estate’s primary grape variety is Sangiovese, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
