Viúva Gomes
(Winery in Sintra)

Provides 1 wine tasting and winery visit from €35.00
At Viúva Gomes, passion drives the creation of wines that reflect personal beliefs, taste, and a deep connection to the Colares terroir. By promoting minimal intervention in the winery, the wines maintain their authenticity and strong ties to their origin. Now a project led by a father and son — 4th and 5th generations — the goal is to uphold the tradition of Colares' wines, while also exploring innovative paths to ensure the sustainability of this unique wine-growing region. Founded in 1808 and located in Almoçageme, Colares, in a wine-growing region defined in 1908, Viúva Gomes sits between the Sintra hills and the Atlantic Ocean, from Cabo da Roca to Magoito, on sandy soils that are crucial to the identity of the region’s wines. The Colares region’s deep roots in winemaking date back to Roman times, and in 1230, King D. Afonso III promoted vine planting. The area gained further recognition in 1865, during the phylloxera crisis that devastated Europe’s vineyards. Colares’ sandy soils, with vine roots reaching up to 8 meters, proved resistant to the insect, a key factor in the survival of its vineyards. Unlike other regions in Europe that adopted the practice of grafting European grape varieties onto American rootstock, Colares maintained its vineyards in their original form.

Casal Sta Maria
(Winery in Sintra)

The history of this Quinta started at the beginning of the XVIII century. The main house was built in 1720 and it is remarkable that it has survived the 1755 earthquake. This is due to the underground granite structure of the Serra de Sintra. The estate's founder Baron Bodo Von Bruemmer together with his wife at first had different aspirations, which they pursued by having started to breed Arab Horses, becoming the first people in Portugal to do so. Followed by this was the creation of the first horse race track close to Cascais. After the death of his wife, alone, Baron Bodo Von Bruemmer decides to put into life his idea of producing wine in the Casal Sta Maria. As always in his life, passionate and efficient, he starts the project 3 weeks later with the first vineyards planted 6 months later. Nowadays, the founder's dream has become true, and the next generations, Nicholas, his grandson as well as his children Nicholas Jr and Maximiliano are taking over the management of the property, inviting you to discover Casal Sta Maria and fall in love with it as much as Baron Bodo Von Bruemmer did in 1962.
