About Winery and Wines
Fontefico is an organic boutique winery in Abruzzo, overlooking the Gulf of Vasto, in the southernmost part of the breathtaking Trabocchi Coast’s landscape. Growing exclusively native grape varieties, such as Pecorino, Trebbiano and Montepulciano, 15 hectare of vineyards caressed by fresh and saline winds of the Adriatic Sea, making mineral and savory wines, with an uncommon structure and longevity. Each wine comes from a single vineyard, with unique and unrepeatable characteristics. Each vineyard therefore has its own identity which is found on the label of each wine. So Pecorino Superiore is “La canaglia” (the rascal), because the vineyard is spiteful, it does not allow itself to be tamed, but then it is forgiven by giving a superlative white wine. Trebbiano Superiore is the “Portarispetto” (bring respect), because this grape variety amazes and tells the land of Abruzzo with a special charm, when you treat its bunches with love and respect. And so on, each vineyard an identity and each wine a character. The peculiarity is that each of these protagonists, harvest after harvest, is drawn on the label in a different way, to tell an anecdote of the vintage. Hence putting together the bottles of the various vintages and the various wines, you can read the story of Fontefico. A story that speaks of terroir and authenticity.
The estate covers about 15 hectares grown organic: every wine is a CRU and it comes from a specific vineyard, unique and unrepeatable. This is our production philosophy, focusing on the careful selection of every element, from the vineyard just to get to the sorting of each bunch of grapes. Above the Punta Penna's headland, the cool and salty winds from the Adriatic Seaconstantly cross our vineyards, keeping the vines dry and healthy. In very hot years, the winds freshen the vines. Moreover, with the natural grassing we get a balanced nutrition for plants because the herbaceous cover acts both as a solar panel in the Spring and as an insulator in the Summer, also limiting soil erosion. In September, the grape is ripe, we harvest it only by hand, using small carts or in 20-kg-boxes. Then we destem the cluster within only 20 minutes, just to preserve the best quality.
