Tenuta Villa della Rosa is a winery, founded in Villamagna, a small medieval village, located 10 km from the white beaches of the Adriatic Sea and 10 km from the snow-capped peaks of the Majella mountain massif. Our philosophy comes from tradition, which has handed down to us the cultivation of roses in the vineyards, as a practice used since ancient times. The rose, an extremely sensitive plant, positioned at the beginning of the rows, monitors the health of the vine and helps the winemaker monitor and protect the vineyard, detecting any pathologies and encouraging rapid intervention. The uniqueness of our production lies in the craftsmanship of each step. Contesa is more than just a winery; it is a living testament to the unbreakable bond between a family and its grapevines, a connection that has yielded an extraordinarily generous land. This story is one of deep commitment, marked by difficult choices and challenging divisions, but also by immense gratification. Over generations, men and women have fiercely guarded the philosophy of wine culture, rooted in integrity, coherence, and pride in their origins. At Contesa, the belief that "wine is made in the vineyard" is central. The journey from grape harvest to bottling in the cellar is treated as a sacred ritual, requiring patience, as it is through time that Nature grants true masterpieces. This natural gift is then shaped by a winemaker's refined and time-honored practices, passed down through generations. The wine cellars at Contesa house exceptional barriques and barrels made from the finest Slovenian oak, alongside innovative steel tanks that carefully regulate temperature, preserving the quality of the must and minimizing technological impact. Yet, equally important is the human element in the process, characterized by genuine conviviality and spontaneous hospitality. The company was founded in the late nineteenth century when Emidio Pepe, grandfather of the present namesake, found in the Torano hills the ideal terroir for the two main Abruzzo grapes. In 1944 his son, Giuseppe, was already known for the quality of his bulk wine. Twenty years later, it was his son’s turn, today known as Ustì, to inherit the land and the knowledge to raise the Trebbiano and the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo to the test of the bottle. Since that 1964, the brand “Pepe” has become the symbol of the territorial expression and longevity, thanks to the empirical and tireless activity of Emidio and of his wife Rosa, who gave him three daughters and supported him both in family life and work. The business has been run within the family over the years, never forgetting the traditions and the know-how of the past. For a long time Emidio’s daughters Daniela and Sofia, with the help of his granddaughter Chiara, have been putting into practice the secrets learned from the parents, to preserve the natural heritage, following the organic way even before the institutional certification and before its trendiness. Today the winery owns 36 acres of land grown following the organic and biodynamic techniques.
