The wines of Bosco de' Medici are a true testament to the unique terroir of the Vesuvian area, offering a captivating journey through indigenous grape varieties and winemaking traditions shaped by centuries of volcanic activity. Our philosophy is rooted in showcasing the essence of this extraordinary land, resulting in wines with distinct character, elegance, and a profound sense of place. The vineyards of Bosco de' Medici thrive on rich, sandy volcanic soils, imparting a remarkable minerality and complexity to our grapes. This unique geological foundation, combined with the Mediterranean climate, contributes to wines that are vibrant, aromatic, and expressive. Many of our vines are "ungrafted" (on their own rootstock), a rare feature that speaks to the health and ancient origins of our vineyards, with some reaching over a century in age.
We proudly cultivate the native grape varieties of Campania, allowing them to express their full potential in our wines:
Caprettone: This rare white grape, almost exclusively found in the Vesuvian area, is a cornerstone of our white wines. It produces wines with beautiful acidity, often featuring notes of apricot, broom flowers, and a distinctive mineral salinity. Our Pompeii Bianco often highlights the purity of Caprettone, sometimes with a fascinating touch of amphora aging for added texture and depth.
Piedirosso: Locally known as "Per' e Palummo" (dove's foot) due to the shape of its cluster, Piedirosso is a key red grape. It yields elegant red wines, often with bright red fruit aromas (cherry, wild berries), floral hints of iris and geranium, and a characteristic acidic-savory backbone that evokes the volcanic landscape. Our Pompeii Rosso and the red Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio are excellent examples of its expressiveness.
Aglianico: A noble red grape of Southern Italy, Aglianico contributes structure, complexity, and a darker fruit profile to our blends. It often brings notes of black pepper and a rich intensity, developing beautifully with age.
Falanghina: Another important white grape from Campania, Falanghina offers crisp freshness, often with hints of citrus, white flowers, and a lively acidity. It frequently features in our white blends, including our Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Bianco.
At Bosco de' Medici, every bottle tells a story – a story of volcanic soil, ancient vines, careful cultivation, and a deep respect for the land and its history. Our wines are an invitation to taste the soul of Vesuvius.
