Cantina Castello di Perno

Winery in Langhe, Alta Langa, Barolo

About the Winery

The Castle of Perno overlooks the village of the same name, which since 1932 has been a hamlet of Monforte d’Alba.

Built in the medieval period by the Falletti family as a defensive stronghold, the Castle was later transformed—between the 17th and 18th centuries—into a residential estate. At the end of the 1970s, it was purchased by the publishing house Giulio Einaudi, which made it its secondary headquarters, twin to the historic site in Via Biancamano in Turin, as well as a working retreat for its writers (among them Primo Levi, to whom the small square beneath the walls of Perno has recently been dedicated).

Since 2012, the Castle has been owned by Professor Gregorio Gitti, Full Professor of Civil Law at the University of Milan and practicing lawyer in the same city. From the outset, the Gitti family’s project has been twofold: to restore the Castle to its history, both its more recent legacy as a home of culture and its older tradition of vine cultivation and winemaking.

In Castelletto, the area that gives its name to a renowned cru of the Barolo DOCG within the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, nestled between the ridgelines of Perno and Serralunga, stands the Castello di Perno Winery. Founded in 2013, it is an estate with a classical soul and a contemporary vision, where elegance represents the highest expression of its wines.

Large stainless-steel vats host the vinification process, following meticulous manual grape selection in the vineyard, allowing each vintage to be interpreted with absolute respect for the varietal identity and for what our terroir naturally offers. The Barolo-making philosophy—pursued through the use of ten-, twenty-, fifty-, and seventy-five-hectolitre Austrian Stockinger oak casks—guides the ageing of our Langhe Nebbiolo and Barolo DOCG Castelletto and Perno, true protagonists of this territory.

Quality and a distinct neoclassical style marry tradition with a constant pursuit of specific and innovative techniques, intending to craft wines of remarkable finesse and strong territorial identity—perfectly recognizable, harmonious, and impeccably balanced.
