Cantina Martinelli
About the Winery
Since 1783, our family has managed the main estate and vineyards near Cortile (MO), experiencing the technological evolution and mechanization of the facilities themselves, studying and understanding the wine-growing heritage present in our territory and seeking to enhance it. At the end of the 1800s, before the establishment of cooperative wineries, the grapes grown on the estate were processed in the family winery in Carpi (MO), in the Due Ponti district.
Here, all the traditional pre-phylloxera grapes that characterized the area's production were pressed and vinified, for a total of 35,000 quintals of grapes harvested by hand and vinified in large vats and wooden barrels.
All this was done using winemaking techniques and technologies that were cutting-edge for the time.
A company that survived two world wars until, unfortunately, it ceased trading in the 1970s. This left room for the full transfer to the cooperative wineries that historically characterize the area, without ever interrupting the activity of winegrowers.
In 2016, we embarked on a journey of experimentation that combines research and tradition. Working with full respect for the soil and the weather, we discovered the true potential of our territory with an atypical project.
In that same year, we planted half a hectare of Traminer on a GDC (double cordon) system, thus beginning a journey that allowed us, over the next five years, to understand and rediscover its true quality yield in a totally new territory.
In 2021, a turning point occurred. What is now called "171" was born, a still Traminer produced entirely in Cortile in the then unborn Cantina Martinelli.
In 2022, thanks to that project, a journey of discovery and innovation began, which led us back to vinifying all the traditional grape varieties, such as Sorbara and Salamino di Santa Croce, experimenting and discovering a new way of making wine.
Cantina Martinelli was born here.
About the Wines
Since 2022 research has continued unabated. As artisan producers, we work with the utmost respect for our grapes. We produce wines using the traditional method (champenois) and the Martinotti method (charmat) from pure Sorbara and Salamino di Santa Croce grapes. At the same time, we don't miss out on that touch of experimentation that we love so much, also producing wines from Traminer grapes and working with red bases of Lambrusco grapes suitable for still wines.
Our mission is to produce wines that highlight the natural expression of its grapes, drawing fresh minerality, structure, and complex flavors, expression of our the land. With both Champenoise and Charmat methods, the wines are crafted with minimal sulfites to preserve purity.
