Cantina Petrelli is a distinguished winery located near Carmiano, in the heart of Salento, a region known for its rich agricultural traditions. Originally established in the mid-1970s, the farm was initially dedicated to tobacco cultivation. However, by the early 1980s, the focus shifted entirely to viticulture, transforming the land into a picturesque expanse of vineyards. In 1984, Paolo Petrelli, driven by his passion for agriculture, founded Cantina Petrelli, laying the groundwork for what has become a renowned winery.
Today, Cantina Petrelli continues to be a family-run enterprise, dedicated to producing wines that embody the unique characteristics of Salento’s terroir. The entire winemaking process, from grape cultivation to the final bottle, takes place on the estate, ensuring the highest quality at every step. About the Wines
Cantina Petrelli is celebrated for its dedication to producing wines that honor both the traditions of Salento and the innovation that defines modern winemaking. The winery specializes in red wines, with a particular focus on the region’s iconic grape varieties. The standout among these is Negroamaro, a robust and deeply flavorful grape often blended with Malvasia Nera di Lecce to create wines with rich, complex profiles. Primitivo, another local favorite, is known for its intense fruitiness and full-bodied character.
In addition to these celebrated reds, Cantina Petrelli also produces a delightful rosé, crafted from Negroamaro grapes through a partial maceration process that yields a fresh, everyday wine with a vibrant color and crisp taste. Excellent experience
The father and daughter welcomed us courteously and took us to their cellar where the entire production process was explained to us, not before showing us their numerous vineyards.
The outdoor picnic, the wine, and the owners' hospitality were excellent.
Excellent experience
The owner was very kind, she came to pick us up and take us back from the nearby train station.

We tasted two excellent wines from the winery and some local products, all of it surrounded by the vineyard.

Fortunately on the actual day it was sunny. Chiara explained about the different wines and assisted us in choosing the wines we preferred. She also allowed us to choose other items for our picnic. We picked a rose, a red wine, a packet of tomato flavoured friselline, a jar of pickled zucchini, and a jar of red pepper pate. We were also given a packet of pucette (2x3 flavours). We only managed to finish the rose and the pucette, but they were delicious. We brought home the rest!
Chiara was very friendly and had laid the picnic mat at a perfect spot to enjoy the view of the vineyard while being shielded from the sun. We had our own private space and it was atmospheric. A perfect way to slow down and enjoy Salento aperitif.
It was a memorable 2 hours for us! With a car from Lecce, the journey was only 15 minutes from the city. But we felt like we were at the countryside, peaceful and scenic.
We wished there could be a brief tour on how the wine is produced or more information about their product (maybe 15 -30 mins) before the picnic.

Romantic picnic experience
The picnic spot was right in the middle of the vineyard and it was truly beautiful. We walked around the grounds and even tasted some of the grapes.
The wine was delicious, and the picnic included a perfect selection of snacks to pair with it.
Highly recommend this experience! Especially as a romantic date for couples.

An alternative afternoon!
We were welcomed at Cantina Petrelli, where we chose to spend an afternoon of complete relaxation having a picnic in their beautifully kept garden.
They gave us the chance to choose from various and good local products, accompanied by fresh wines, all to be discovered. A pleasant idea to discover the world of wine, with a different experience that is more suitable for families with children.
