Castello Vicchiomaggio

Winery in Chianti, Chianti Classico, Hills of Florence, Val d'Elsa

About the Winery

Castello Vicchiomaggio is a historic winery located atop a hill overlooking the Greve Valley in Chianti, Tuscany. The estate spans 140 hectares, with 34 hectares dedicated to vineyards and 10 hectares to olive groves. The Matta family, led by John and Paola Matta, has been dedicated to maintaining the winemaking traditions of the castle, which date back centuries. Their commitment to quality and passion for viticulture have positioned Castello Vicchiomaggio as a renowned producer of exceptional wines in the Chianti Classico region.

About the Wines

At Castello Vicchiomaggio, we cultivate traditional grape varieties such as Sangiovese, essential for producing Chianti Classico, as well as international varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, used for our IGT red wines. Our vineyards benefit from a Mediterranean climate and Galestro soil, with all vines facing south to ensure optimal sun exposure. We employ both cordon spur and guyot training systems, tailored to each grape variety to manage yield and enhance quality. Harvesting is done manually from mid-September to mid-October, followed by meticulous vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wines then mature in French oak barrels for periods ranging from 8 to 24 months, depending on the type, before bottling and further refinement.

Our wine selection includes:

Chianti Classico Annata: A young, fresh, and fruity wine, perfect for any occasion.

Chianti Classico Riserva: Aged longer for added complexity and depth, showcasing the elegance of Sangiovese.

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione: Our top-tier Chianti, made from the finest grapes and aged to perfection.

Super Tuscan: A blend of traditional and international varieties, offering a rich and robust flavor profile.

IGT Toscana Bianco: A white wine crafted from Vermentino grapes, presenting a crisp and refreshing taste.

Toscana Rosato IGT "Floreale"

A day in Chianti
Great hospitality, exquisite visit, excellent experience.
Not just good wine, but also good food.
Our guide was friendly and competent.
It would be nice to extend the visit to the castle inside.

We spent 4 days at Vicchiomaggio, early October 2015, and it was an excellent location to have as a base to tour around Tuscany, taking you into the heartland of the rolling hills and valleys of this beautiful area. Good food, great wine, from their vinyards of course.
Great accommodation, and loads of culture left from the last century. A must see place, to experience. Source: google Nick Dendy

Have a feeling that the winery is the main business concern here and guests are treated as second fiddle. Breakfast is mediocre and there is zero atmosphere in the dining room. Staff walking around the complex were generally unfriendly. However the infinity pool is brilliant. Shame they shut it for cleaning for 2 hours in the middle of a Sunday afternoon when it was 35 degrees and there were half the hotel guests around the pool totally puzzled as to why this couldn't have been done at another time! Staff completely unapologetic, lied to my face saying the pool always gets cleaned then and I should check the rules, I did and the rules said Thursday! Finally hotel manager came down to pool to unenthusiastically apologise, giving the impression it was somehow 'our fault'!?! Wouldn't stay again unless all staff were replaced with people who were customer focused! Source: google Alex Vincent
