(Winery in Val d'Elsa)
Provides 1 wine tasting and winery visit from €35.00
Tenuta Le Calcinaie is a small but prestigious estate located just 3 km from San Gimignano, in the province of Siena. The winery takes its name from the composition of the soil, where layers of limestone, formed from marine deposits of the Pliocene era, lie just half a meter underground.
Founded by Simone Santini, a passionate wine technician, the estate began with Vigna ai Sassi, the first hectare of Vernaccia vines, planted in 1986. In 1989, 7,000 square meters were dedicated to red grape varieties. The first wine, Teodoro, a 100% Sangiovese, was produced in 1993, followed by the first vintage of Vernaccia di San Gimignano in 1995. Today, Tenuta Le Calcinaie extends over 12 hectares, producing an average of 70,000 bottles per year. Since 1995, the estate has followed organic farming protocols, with both vineyards and wines certified organic under EU and NOP regulations.
A significant milestone was reached in 2006 with the construction of a new underground cellar, ensuring a stable, natural environment for aging wines, free from thermal fluctuations. The unique terroir, featuring limestone, clay, sand, and fossil layers, shapes mineral-driven, structured, and flavorful white wines. The north-eastern exposure protects the delicate Vernaccia grapes from excessive sun. Red varieties, grown at higher altitudes, benefit from skeletal soils rich in brown and red clay, enhancing power and color in the wines. The vineyards sit at elevations between 200 and 250 meters above sea level.
