LA BADIA

Winery in Langhe, Monferrato, Moscato d'Asti, Alta Langa, Hills of Asti

About the Winery

The La Badia winery, located in the municipality of Calosso, can be reached by panoramic roads of the Langa of Asti, where vineyards cultivated mainly with Moscato and Barbera alternate with other types of crops and wooded areas. It is the owners, the brothers Giuseppe and Marco Bussi, who welcome guests directly, leading them to the discovery of the territory and the products that have allowed the company to receive numerous awards and reports in important guides and magazines in the sector.

There is no lack of knowledge and familiarity in wine production in the cellar. The Bussi brothers, in fact, entered the world of winemaking in the mid-1980s by working with the Moscato grapes, when it was common for most young producers to gain experience with Barbera grapes. In fact, Barbera demonstrates better resistance to winemaking stress and consequently tastes better tolerate even errors dictated by initial inexperience. It is therefore no coincidence that nowadays the flagship wines of production are the Moscato of Asti DOCG and Barbera of Asti DOCG.

A story that begins in 1987
The name Badia probably refers to an active monastic community in the vicinity, whose traces have now been lost. The same term also indicates the name of wild cliffs, the
Badie, located not far from the farmhouse. The history of the winery begins in the 1900s. Formerly, grandfather Felice produced a modest quantity of Moscato wine intended for bulk sale. The current headquarters, a typical Piedmontese courtyard, is the same as its origins: a large building once shared between five families. Here, Giuseppe and Marco's great-grandfather arrived as a servant, receiving her in inheritance following marriage to the owner's daughter. Since 1987, the current owners have resumed their grandfather's business, becoming wine producers according to modern standards. The production is entirely followed by the family. In the cellar, it is in fact possible to get to know the owners with their parents, Aldo and Lidia, Marco's wife, Maria, and their son Luca, a student of oenology.

About the Wines

La Badia is a family-run company located in Calosso in the province of Asti. We fully manage the entire production cycle, starting from the land, up to and including winemaking and marketing. The extension of the company is approximately 20 ha. Our average annual production varies between 40,000 and 42,000 bottles, considering the fact that we do not vinify all the grapes we produce, as part of the grapes are given to the industry, although, if necessary, we have the possibility of increasing production.

The estate only produces native wines from native grapes such as Barbera of Asti and Moscato of Asti, which represent 2 of our flagship products. Other native wines we produce are, for example, Calosso, Monferrato Dolcetto, Piemonte Cortese, and Piemonte Chardonnay. We also produce late harvests, grappa, vermouth and sparkling wines deriving from the wines we produce listed above.
