About Winery and Wines

Nestled in the rolling hills of Terricciola, in the heart of the Terre di Pisa, Pieve de’ Pitti spans 198 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, fields, and woodlands, surrounding the historic Villa and the ruins of the medieval Castle of Pava. The estate takes its name from the noble Florentine Pitti family, owners until the 17th century, and from the Pieve di San Giovanni — a church built over ancient Etruscan remains and still consecrated today.

Once a fortified village and military outpost, the castle was strategically placed at a valley crossroads and later evolved into a rural hamlet. Historical records from 1406 to 1822 trace its transformation and ownership, eventually passing to our family in the late 1960s. Stories linger about underground tunnels, hidden treasures, and even a golden horse. During recent excavations, human remains and Etruscan pottery were unearthed — likely from the castle's cemetery.

Today, the estate is brought to life by three passionate people: Sergio, the “gentleman farmer” and sales manager, loves sharing wines and Tuscan legends — and his collection of Pinocchios. Ida, the heart of the kitchen, prepares traditional local recipes and oversees events and weddings with warmth and flair. Her 400+ owl collection adds a quirky charm to the villa. And Caterina, our winemaker and vineyard manager, handles every step from vine to bottle with tireless dedication and contagious enthusiasm. She’ll take you through the vineyards (wear comfy shoes!), show you her world, and share her love of wine — no jargon, just real stories.

Pieve de’ Pitti isn’t just a winery — it’s a living heritage, a family home, and a place where wine, food, and stories bring people together.

Each bottle from Pieve de’ Pitti tells a story — of soil, family, and a land shaped by sea breezes and centuries of tradition. Come visit, taste, and experience our wines where they were born.
Aprilante – IGT Toscana Vermentino
Grape: 100% Vermentino
Aprilante is a lively, expressive white born from a single northwest-facing vineyard kissed by sea breezes and morning frost. First bottled on April 3, 2004, it’s become our symbol of immediacy and joy. The grapes are pressed whole to preserve freshness, fermented with only indigenous yeasts. The result is a crisp, mineral-driven wine with a round mid-palate and a clean almond finish. No special occasion needed — just pop it open and enjoy life.

Tribiana – IGT Toscana Trebbiano
Grape: 100% Trebbiano
Tribiana revives the ancient white wine tradition of our region. Made from three small vineyards with diverse soils and sun exposures, this Trebbiano undergoes a long harvest and separate vinifications — some in stainless steel, some in French oak. Aged for 24 months, it’s golden in color and complex in flavor: full-bodied, with a fresh mineral backbone and signature honeyed notes. The bee on the label, painted by local artist Romano Masoni, reflects both land and story.

Rossato – IGT Toscana Sangiovese Rosato
Grape: 100% Sangiovese
Rossato (with a bold double “S”) is our playful take on Sangiovese rosé, born from light-pressed grapes from the mineral-rich Scopajo vineyard. Its delicate cherry-pink hue comes from a long pressing in a wooden basket press. On the nose: grapefruit, wild herbs, and forest berries. The finish is fresh, savory, and silky — a rosé made to drink and drink again. The fish-themed label was designed by one of our wine-loving guests!

Appunto – IGT Toscana Merlot
Grape: 100% Merlot
Appunto is our pure Merlot, born from blue clays — “mattaione” — that make growing challenging but rewarding. After years of trials, we nailed it in 2015: a hot summer, perfect fruit, well-balanced canopy — everything aligned, appunto. Aged in cement to preserve purity and freshness, it’s smooth and elegant, with round fruit and herbal notes under control. A versatile red that wins over every palate.

Scopaiolo – IGT Toscana Syrah
Grape: 100% Syrah
Scopaiolo is our young, fresh expression of Syrah, planted on sandy, skeletal-rich soils. Fermented and aged only in stainless steel, this red offers vivid fruit, color, and spice, with soft tannins and a savory finish. It’s our summer red — perfect with seafood or light meats — and proof that Syrah, too, can speak the language of Tuscany. Its artist-designed label is our second in the "signature series."

Cerretello – Chianti Superiore DOCG
Grapes: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Malvasia Nera
Cerretello is our flagship Chianti, produced since 2001 and made with only the best clusters — selected by hand and thinned in the vineyard to reduce yields. Fermented in cement, it blends tradition and freshness, with bright cherry notes, soft tannins, and the timeless taste of the Chianti we remember from childhood. This wine is the soul of Pieve de’ Pitti.

Moro di Pava – Chianti Riserva DOCG
Grape: 100% Sangiovese
Moro di Pava is our Riserva, a deeper, darker sibling of Cerretello. Made from the ripest grapes from the oldest vines, it’s fermented with native yeasts, aged in old barrels and only bottled when ready. With intense color, firm tannins, red fruit, earthy spice, and a long savory finish, it’s classic Sangiovese with a wild Tuscan edge. The name recalls the Etruscan hill of Pava — home to ancient ruins, legends, and today, our tasting room.
