Azienda Agricola Meroni
About the Winery
Nestled in the historic Valpolicella Classica region, Meroni Winery is located in the municipality of Sant'Ambrogio, just 18 km from Verona. The estate spans 15 hectares, with 11 dedicated to vineyards and 4 to olive groves and woodland, preserving the area's natural balance. This land, historically known as "Vallis polis cellae" or "the valley of many cellars," has been cultivated since Roman times, serving as a crucial wine-producing area for the Roman Empire.
The winery's history is intertwined with that of the region. In a cartographic document from 1706 in the State Archives of Venice, the old building that now serves as the winery’s headquarters was already marked. This historic building is located on the "Sengia" farm, which appears in the "Napoleon Land Cadastral Map" as "arable land with vine-planted hills." Since 1935, when the estate was acquired by Carlo Roberto Meroni, the winery has been producing wines exclusively from grapes grown on its own estates, "Sengia" and "Maso." These vineyards are located in some of the most prestigious areas of Valpolicella, including the Grola locality, which is legendary as the birthplace of Recioto and Amarone.
The Meroni family has always been dedicated to the careful cultivation of their land, producing wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the Valpolicella terroir. Their wine production is divided into two main lines: "Sengia," named after the estate, and "Il Velluto" (meaning "velvet"), a tribute to the famous Veronese poet Berto Barbarani, who captured the spirit of the region in his dialectal works.
Today, the Meroni Winery continues to uphold its legacy, blending traditional winemaking practices with a deep respect for the land. The estate’s wines, particularly their Recioto and Amarone, are celebrated for their richness, complexity, and longevity, embodying the history and heritage of Valpolicella Classica in every bottle.
