Winery stays in Piedmont: where to sleep among the vineyards

The 15 wine holidays on this page cover five wine areas of Piedmont: the Langhe and Roero, the Gavi hills, the hills of Novara, the Canavese and the Pinerolese. All but one last a single night; the exception is a three-day trip to the Barolo hills that starts in Florence.

Where can you stay at a winery in Piedmont?

At wineries, farmhouses and small hotels in each of these areas. Six to start from:

• Palás Cerequio, in La Morra: the Michele Chiarlo family's restored residence inside a Barolo cru, with breakfast, an outdoor pool and whirlpool, and a guided tasting of 5 wines.
• Costa Catterina, at Castagnito in the Roero: three rooms on the family estate, breakfast, a winery visit and a tasting that includes their Barolo.
• Cascina Binè, at Novi Ligure in the Gavi hills: a restored farmhouse where the family or their hospitality manager takes you through the vineyards and the cellar before a tasting of 4 wines.
• Cantina Dellerba, near Pinerolo: a room with a private jacuzzi, a vineyard and winery visit with the winemaker, and a tasting of 3 wines.
• Cantina Fontechiara, at Borgomanero in the hills of Novara: a night at the Relais Profumo di Vino, a winery tour and a tasting of 2 or 3 wines with local products.
• Canavese wine discovery weekend, from Settimo Vittone: a route through the Nebbiolo vineyards towards Carema, a winery tasting, a night in a traditional hotel and, the next day, Erbaluce wines at the regional wine shop in Caluso and a picnic.

What is the difference between Essence and Cru?

They are two levels of the stays Winedering arranges with the estates: Essence covers the night, breakfast and a guided tasting, and Cru adds more. At Cascina Binè the Essence includes the vineyard and cellar visit and 4 wines with Piedmontese products, and leaves the evening free; the Cru adds a tasting dinner at the farmhouse.

What will you taste?

Nebbiolo above all, the grape of Barolo and Barbaresco, grown in the Langhe and Roero alongside Barbera, Dolcetto and the white Arneis. Around Gavi the white Cortese leads, in the Canavese the white Erbaluce, and in the valleys of the Pinerolese the local red Ramìe.

When is the best time to go?

October, when Nebbiolo is picked and the white truffle fair opens in Alba; it runs until early December, so autumn weekends in the Langhe fill up early. Spring and early summer are quieter.
