Marchesi Gondi - Tenuta Bossi
About the Winery
Tenuta Bossi, nestled in the rolling hills of Chianti Rufina, has been a cornerstone of the Gondi family’s agricultural legacy since 1592. The estate, surrounded by picturesque vineyards and olive groves, is steeped in centuries of winemaking tradition, producing some of Tuscany’s finest Chianti Rufina DOCG wines and premium extra virgin olive oil.
Owned by the Gondi family, one of Florence’s most ancient noble families, Tenuta Bossi reflects a deep connection to the land and an enduring dedication to excellence. The Gondi family’s illustrious history dates back to the time of Charlemagne, and they have played significant roles as political leaders, merchants, and patrons of the arts in both Italy and France. Over the centuries, they cultivated strong ties with notable figures such as the Medici family, and their influence extended across Europe, even financing the first voyage of explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano.
At Tenuta Bossi, this remarkable heritage blends seamlessly with a profound respect for the Tuscan landscape. The estate’s vineyards, located at higher altitudes, benefit from a unique microclimate, which imparts elegance and complexity to the wines. The Chianti Rufina wines produced here are known for their structure and aging potential, while the extra virgin olive oil, including the renowned Laudemio, is celebrated for its purity and exceptional flavor.
Today, Tenuta Bossi is managed by the 25th generation of the Gondi family, who continue to honor the agricultural traditions passed down by their ancestors. The estate also serves as a testament to their forward-thinking approach, incorporating innovative farming techniques while maintaining a deep-rooted respect for the environment. Visitors to Tenuta Bossi can experience the beauty of the Tuscan countryside and the family’s commitment to producing high-quality wines and olive oil, all while being immersed in the rich history that defines the Gondi name.
About the Wines
Tenuta Bossi, part of the historic Gondi family estate, offers a diverse selection of wines that showcase both tradition and innovation in the heart of Chianti Rufina. The vineyards produce a range of wines, including Chianti Rufina DOCG, Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT, and Vin Santo, each reflecting the estate's rich heritage and commitment to quality.
Poggio Diamante: A Chianti Rufina Riserva produced from the historic Poggio Diamante vineyard, originally planted in the mid-19th century. This wine is known for its structure and elegance, featuring Sangiovese clones that lend it complexity and depth. It has been a standout wine since its recognition at the 1889 Paris Expo.
Sassobianco: A Colli dell’Etruria Centrale Bianco D.O.C. that was traditionally made from Trebbiano until 1987, showcasing a fresh expression of the region's white varietals.
Violana: A Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT rosé developed after years of experimentation by Bernardo Gondi, crafted to meet the growing demand for a fresh, lively wine.
San Giuliano: A Chianti Rufina DOCG made from carefully selected varieties since 2000, offering a classic expression of the region's terroir.
Pian dei Sorbi: A Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG that bridges the gap between the estate's traditional base wine and its more structured reserves, designed to be fresh and easy to drink.
Villa Bossi: The flagship Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG, a wine of great longevity and structure. Often considered the estate’s Gran Cru, it has been produced with the same blend since 1988.
Mazzaferrata: A bold Super Tuscan (Rosso Colli Toscana Centrale IGT), made from pure Cabernet Sauvignon, first produced in the late 1980s. This wine pays homage to the Gondi family's warrior origins, with its name symbolizing strength and resilience.
Ser Amerigo: A blend of local and international varieties (Rosso Colli Toscana Centrale IGT), reflecting a modern approach to winemaking while preserving the estate’s Tuscan roots.
Fiammae: A wine born from the vision of Gerardo and Lapo Gondi, blending tradition and innovation in a Sangiovese-forward wine that showcases power, balance, and freshness (Rosso Colli Toscana Centrale IGT).
Cardinal de Retz: A Vin Santo del Chianti Rufina Riserva DOC, a classic sweet wine made according to tradition, with production dating back to the 1950s, exclusively using Trebbiano grapes.
Marchesi Gondi Grappa: A refined grappa produced in collaboration with Bonollo, made from the estate’s grape pomace, continuing the Gondi family’s long-standing interest in distillation.
The wines of Tenuta Bossi reflect the estate’s deep connection to Tuscan history while embracing modern techniques to craft a diverse range of high-quality wines. Each bottle carries the legacy of the Gondi family, rooted in tradition yet constantly evolving.

Chianti Rufina Tasting
Even with little notice, we managed to book one at Tenuta Bossi, a splendid villa in the hills of Pontassieve.
We were welcomed by the very kind Gerardo, who first accompanied us into the garden to tell us his family's story, then into the cellars, where we literally “breathed in” the passion with which they carry on their work.
Afterwards, we were accompanied to the tasting room where the sommelier Giacomo had us taste, with friendliness and extreme patience towards us tasting novices, the five varieties of their wines, accompanied by a sampling of local cured meats and cheeses, plus a little treat: a taste of their oil.
Extremely satisfied, we left, but not before buying their products.
Wonderful experience
Immediately after, you move on to the visit of the actual cellars with a detailed explanation of the wine and oil production and the various stages of aging.
It all concludes with the actual tasting of three types of wine and an oil with a corresponding presentation of the products. Our guide was helpful and thorough, able to fully immerse and involve the visitors in the experience and ready to answer all questions and curiosities. The products are of excellent quality and you end up being very undecided when it comes time to purchase (if you wish). The experience in general is very good value for money.
