More information on Latium

Located in central Italy and home of the country’s capital, Rome, Latium is a region rich in history, culture and charm. Within its territory, you will be able to visit ancient remains, beautiful palaces, fascinating medieval villages, and, of course, some unique wineries where you can enjoy wine tastings surrounded by secular olive groves and vineyards.

Your wine tastings in Latium will give you the opportunity to learn more about the winemaking traditions of the area. Even though vines in Latium were already present beforehand, it was under the Roman Empire that this territory started developing its own wine culture. After the empire, these traditions were carried on by the popes of the Renaissance. In the early 1900s, the most well-known wines of Latium were Castelli Romani, Frascati, Marino and Est! Est!! Est!!!, all obtained from native vines. Nowadays, the history of Latium’s viticulture is changing thanks to an interesting work of requalification of its autochthonous vines.

Which food to taste in Latium?

Between a winery visit and a wine tasting in Latium, make sure to indulge in some local cuisine. Latium’s traditional cuisine includes a few of Italy’s most loved dishes, such as bucatini cacio e pepe, carbonara or Amatriciana, saltimbocca (veal cutlets) alla romana, giudea artichokes, coda alla vaccinara (oxtail stew), porchetta from Ariccia. If you are wandering around Rome and suddenly fancy a snack, make sure to try their pizza by the slice.

Which wines to taste in Latium?

During your winery visits in Latium, you will come across a wide variety of local and international vines. The most widespread local black grape variety is Cesanese, while other popular varieties are Merlot, Montepulciano, Ciliegiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon. The most popular white grape types are instead Malvasia and Trebbiano, while Grechetto grapes can be found in the area bordering with Umbria.

Which is the best season to visit Latium?

The best seasons to plan your wine tastings and winery visits in Latium are either spring or autumn when the temperatures are quite pleasant and the days are generally sunnier. If you’re planning to visit Rome, we recommend avoiding the hot and muggy months of July and August.
