Wine tasting in Calabria: which wineries to visit

This page lists more than 20 wine tastings at some twenty Calabrian wineries, almost all in three areas far apart: the province of Reggio Calabria, from the Costa Viola to the Locride; Cirò, on the Ionian coast about 30 km north of Crotone; and the Cosenza area, between the Sila and Pollino mountains. A few more are around Tropea and Vibo Valentia. Most last from 90 minutes to three hours, usually with 3 to 5 wines, and more than two in three include food, from pecorino to 'nduja. Guests have left more than 100 reviews on Winedering. About half of all bookings go to one winery, Ceramida, above Bagnara Calabra, under an hour's drive from Reggio Calabria.

Which wineries should you visit in Calabria?

Ceramida is the most booked; otherwise, choose by area, as each has its own wines. In the province of Reggio Calabria:

  • Ceramida, in Bagnara Calabra: a morning walk among Zibibbo and Calabrese Nero vines on the Costa Viola terraces, then 4 estate wines with Pellegrina pizza and 'nduja.
  • Murace, in Bivongi: by 4x4 to the Byzantine monastery of San Giovanni Theristis and on to the steep vineyards, then 3 wines and mosto cotto, a cooked grape must, with taralli and flatbread.
  • Tenuta Dioscuri, in Bianco: Flavio shows you the vines, the greenhouses for drying grapes and the family olive mill; the estate's wines include Greco di Bianco and a Mantonico passito.

In Cirò Marina:

  • Dell'Aquila: the owner leads the visit and helps you pick 3 wines, from Cirò Rosso Classico to a skin-contact white.
  • Senatore: a family of winegrowers for four generations, organic since 2017. You tour the estate, then taste 5 wines.

In the province of Cosenza:

  • Tenute Pacelli, in Malvito: a young family winery run almost entirely by women, with organic vines below an 18th-century hunting lodge. You tour the cellar and vineyards, then taste the wines with local produce.
  • Farneto del Principe, in Altomonte: by 4x4 through almost 100 hectares of vines, then 4 wines with cured meats and cheese.

Which Calabrian wines will you taste?

Mostly wines from native grapes: Gaglioppo for reds, Greco Bianco for whites. The best known is Cirò: the red and rosé are at least 80% Gaglioppo, the white at least 80% Greco Bianco. Classico wines come only from Cirò and Cirò Marina, which since 2025 also have a DOCG for their red, Cirò Classico. In the Locride, the wine to know is Greco di Bianco, a sweet wine from dried grapes made only in Bianco and in part of Casignana. On the Tyrrhenian coast the grape is Zibibbo, also made dry: Artese, near Vibo Valentia, makes one and holds its tasting among vines overlooking the sea. Around Cosenza the red is Magliocco, the backbone of the Terre di Cosenza DOC, and Moscato di Saracena is a Slow Food Presidium passito: Cantine Viola was founded to promote it and ends its tasting with the Moscato and a Moscato grappa.

Where can you do a sunset wine tasting in Calabria?

At a handful of wineries, mostly on the Tyrrhenian side. The most booked experience on this page is the sunset tasting at Ceramida, 400 metres above sea level over Bagnara, facing the Strait of Messina and the Aeolian Islands: the estate's wines with Monte Poro pecorino, cured meats and Pellegrina pizza, with an optional transfer from Reggio Calabria, Scilla or Palmi. In Taurianova, near Gioia Tauro, Cantine Caccamo serves an apericena, an aperitivo that becomes dinner, among the vines, with all 6 of its wines. On the Ionian side, in Caulonia, Feudo Gagliardi pours 4 or 5 organic Locride IGP wines at sunset. Near Tropea, the operator CST Travel organises a sunset Calabrian buffet with 6 wines at an organic winery in Brattirò; the transfer from Tropea and the surrounding areas is on request and not included.

When is the best time for wine tasting in Calabria?

Summer is the busiest season: June to August brings more than half of the year's bookings and August alone nearly a quarter, while November to March brings fewer than one in ten. Cantine Aperte (Open Cellars), a weekend at the end of May, opens only the Movimento Turismo del Vino member wineries that sign up: few in Calabria, and not necessarily those on this page. The Movimento's Calabrian branch publishes the list. Many of these tastings can also be given as a gift: the recipient picks the date.
