Wine tasting in Campania: which areas and wineries to visit

On Winedering, almost half the bookings in Campania go to wineries on the slopes of Vesuvius, less than an hour from Naples, but you can also go wine tasting in the Campi Flegrei, on the Amalfi Coast, in Irpinia, the Sannio, the Cilento and the province of Caserta. This page lists more than 100 wine tastings and winery visits at more than 40 wineries. Nearly three in four last between one and three hours, usually with 3 to 5 wines, and guests have left more than 200 reviews.

Which Campania wineries are worth visiting?

Among the most booked on Winedering over the last two years, each in a different area:

  • Fuocomuorto, in Ercolano, on Vesuvius: vineyards overlooking the Bay of Naples and a natural cave in the lava rock, then 5 wines, including a sparkling rosé.
  • Tenuta San Francesco, in Tramonti, on the Amalfi Coast: pre-phylloxera vines and a 17th-century cellar, then 3 Costa d'Amalfi Tramonti DOC wines with panzanella.
  • Pietreionne, in Ponte, in the Sannio: the winemaker shows you the Falanghina vineyards and the cellar, then a full lunch in its restaurant with its wines.
  • Villa Matilde, in Cellole, in the province of Caserta: vineyard, cellar and 4 wines, with the story of the family that revived Falerno, the most famous wine of ancient Rome.
  • Verrone, in Agropoli, in the Cilento: the Girapoggio estate, inside the Cilento National Park, then 4 wines, including a sparkling one.

What wines is Campania known for, and where can you taste them?

Campania's wines come almost entirely from native grapes: Aglianico and Piedirosso for the reds, Falanghina, Fiano, Greco and Coda di Volpe for the whites. Each area has its own:

  • Vesuvius: Lacryma Christi, a white from Caprettone or Coda di Volpe and a red from Piedirosso, grown on volcanic soils.
  • Irpinia: the hills around Avellino, about an hour from Naples, home to three of Campania's four DOCGs: Taurasi, a red from Aglianico, and two whites, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. More than 20 experiences.
  • Sannio: around Benevento, home of Falanghina del Sannio and Aglianico del Taburno, the fourth DOCG, with about 20 experiences. In Sant'Agata de' Goti, Mustilli opens its historic cellar dug into the tuff.
  • Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Peninsula: terraced vineyards, the Costa d'Amalfi DOC, with its Furore, Ravello and Tramonti subzones, and the Penisola Sorrentina DOC. In Sorrento, De Angelis pours 5 wines in its barrel room.
  • Cilento: Aglianico and Fiano around Agropoli and Prignano Cilento, in more than 10 experiences.
  • Province of Caserta: Falerno del Massico and Asprinio di Aversa, a white from vines trained up poplar trees, which I Borboni, in Lusciano, makes the old way again, in tuff caves 15 metres underground.

Where can you go wine tasting near Naples?

The closest wineries to Naples are in the Campi Flegrei, west of the city, and on Vesuvius, to the south-east. Cantine Astroni is within the Naples city limits, on the slopes of the Astroni crater: 5 Falanghina and Piedirosso wines with a platter, a slice of pizza and a pasta dish. In Pompeii, Bosco de' Medici pairs 5 volcanic wines with lunch. Central Naples also has guided tastings in wine bars, and the province of Naples has about 40 experiences. If you'd rather not drive, this page also lists more than 30 Campania wine tours: many leave from Naples, and about half take you to a Vesuvius winery, often with Pompeii or Herculaneum. Only a few visit two wineries in one day.

Where can you have lunch with a wine tasting in Campania?

More than 25 winery experiences include lunch, over a third of them on Vesuvius. At Sorrentino, in Boscotrecase, the lunch after the vineyard tour looks out to Capri and Pompeii: casatiello, a Neapolitan stuffed bread, pasta with Piennolo tomatoes and 4 organic wines, including two Lacryma Christi Superiore. At Le Lune del Vesuvio, in Terzigno, each course comes with its own wine, from Coda di Volpe to a Lacryma Christi Riserva. Some add a cooking class: at Sorrentino, for example, you make gnocchi and tiramisu. Dinner at a winery is rare.

When is the best time for wine tasting in Campania?

Spring and autumn are the most popular seasons: on Winedering, together they bring six in ten of the year's bookings, and September is the busiest month. The harvest here ends late, with Aglianico often left on the vine until November. Wineries across Campania also open their doors for Italy's wine tourism events: Cantine Aperte on the last weekend of May, Calici di Stelle in summer and Cantine Aperte in Vendemmia from late August to October. Many of these tastings can also be given as a gift: whoever receives the voucher picks the date.
