Wine tasting in Piedmont: which wine regions and wineries to visit

Most of the wineries on this page are in the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, the hills about an hour's drive from Turin whose vineyard landscapes became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. There are also wineries in Gavi, the Colli Tortonesi and Alto Piemonte. There are more than 450 wine tastings and winery visits at about 200 wineries. Nearly three in four last between an hour and a half and two and a half hours, usually with 3 to 5 wines, and guests have left more than 1,700 reviews on Winedering.

Which Piedmont wineries are worth visiting?

Among the most booked on Winedering over the last two years, each in a different part of Piedmont:

  • Vini Romana, in Dogliani, in the Langhe: vineyard and cellar, then 7 wines, from Favorita to Barolo, with local cured meats and cheese.
  • La Mondianese, in Montemagno, Monferrato: the cellar and the underground barrel room, then 5 wines with local cured meats and cheese.
  • Cinque Quinti, in Cella Monte, Monferrato Casalese: a visit down into the infernot, a small cellar dug into the sandstone, then 4 wines, including a Grignolino, by the fire or on the terrace.
  • Bosca, in Canelli: the Underground Cathedrals, where its sparkling wines age, with light and music, then one traditional method and two Charmat sparkling wines.
  • La Piemontina, in Ghemme, Alto Piemonte: after the cellar, 4 wines to guess at its Wine Casino by placing chips.

What wines come from Piedmont, and where can you taste them?

Piedmont is above all red wine country: Nebbiolo makes Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara and Ghemme, alongside Barbera, Dolcetto, Grignolino and Ruchè. Among the whites and sparkling wines are Gavi, Arneis, Timorasso, Erbaluce, Moscato d'Asti and Alta Langa. Each area has its own:

  • Langhe: Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo around Alba, with more than half the bookings and a page of their own.
  • Barolo and Barbaresco: Nebbiolo's two most famous wines, with more than 100 experiences around Barolo and more than 20 around Barbaresco.
  • Roero: across the Tanaro, on sandy soils, Arneis and Roero Nebbiolo, in more than 20 experiences.
  • Alta Langa: Piedmont's traditional method sparkling wine, from hillside vineyards across the Langhe and Monferrato.
  • Moscato d'Asti: the sweet white of Canelli, Santo Stefano Belbo and nearby villages.
  • Monferrato: Barbera, Grignolino and Ruchè, from the Hills of Asti to Monferrato Casalese, in more than 150 experiences.
  • Gavi: the white made from Cortese, in about 30 experiences.
  • Colli Tortonesi: Timorasso, a white grape that nearly disappeared, in about 10 experiences.
  • Alto Piemonte: at the foot of Monte Rosa, Nebbiolo is called Spanna and makes Gattinara, Ghemme, Boca and Lessona, with about 10 experiences in the Novara hills and around Biella.

Where can you go wine tasting near Turin?

Close to Turin, most of the wineries on this page are in the Canavese, towards Ivrea, and the Pinerolese, while the Langhe and Monferrato are about an hour's drive. About 20 experiences are in the province of Turin. In the Canavese you taste Erbaluce di Caluso, a DOCG white. In the Pinerolese, Cantina Dellerba pairs 3 barrel-aged wines with its own cured meats and cheese, with Monviso in view. If you would rather not drive, several of the more than 20 Piedmont wine tours leave from Turin, either with a driver to the Barolo and Langhe wineries or by train and e-bike into the Canavese.

Where can you have lunch or a vineyard picnic with a wine tasting in Piedmont?

More than 30 experiences include lunch or a picnic, mostly in the Langhe and Monferrato. In San Marzano Oliveto, Amerio Vincenzo pairs 6 wines with a light Piedmontese lunch, such as vitello tonnato and agnolotti al plin. Oddone Prati, in Acqui Terme, drives you by Land Rover to a picnic spot among the vines, with a basket of local food and a bottle of sparkling rosé for every 4 people. Dinner is rarer: in Mombaruzzo, Tère Rüse shows you the vineyard and its amphora cellar, then serves lunch or dinner with all 8 of its wines.

When is the best time for wine tasting in Piedmont?

Autumn is the most popular season: on Winedering, October and November account for more than a third of the year's bookings. It is the season of the Nebbiolo harvest and the Alba White Truffle Fair, which runs from October to early December. The Movimento Turismo del Vino, Italy's wine tourism association, runs winery events: Cantine Aperte on the last weekend of May, Calici di Stelle in summer and Cantine Aperte in Vendemmia from late August to October. These are the busiest days; you can also book other dates. Many of these tastings can also be given as a gift: whoever receives the voucher picks the date.
