5 An afternoon of tasting beneath the trees (Vicky)Around half an hour’s drive east of Blaye, Château Lapourcaud dates back to 1883 but has been recently revived to its former glory by owner-vigneron Vincent Gas. Under normal circumstances, Vincent would have got us involved in the vineyard: learning about the process by doing a little pruning or harvesting. But Mother Nature had other ideas, with temperatures soaring into the mid-30s, demanding we find shade after about ten minutes. Not to worry: in the château’s gardens, we sat beneath the trees and enjoyed a tasting of six different bottles, alongside a multitude of local cheeses, foie gras and magret de canard. My personal favourite was Château Lapourcaud’s own 2023 blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, which was bright and light on its feet. But we also tasted Vincent’s brother’s white and red blends from just down the road, as well as some other wines from the local cooperative of which Château Lapourcaud is a member. If I could pick one tasting note that carried through every wine we tried, it would be: “peppery” – which says something about the region’s terroir. I’m already a planning a second visit, and next time I hope it’ll be cool enough to do a little work in the vineyard!

3 Guinot wine tasting (Neil)Very informative tour. Only 4 of us. Wine samples were very small though, less than a shot of each wine. Had to stand up in reception for tasting and interrupted by other customers. Would have been far nicer sat down in the gardens giving full attention to us doing the sampling. Although we booked English tour, a lot of the video was in french only.

5 A grand yet subtle experience (Bruce)The 7th generation owners and sisters were truly inviting and welcoming. The residence has an interesting history right back to Roman times, and has been in the same family since at least 1750. Suppliers to the royals in previous generations we were treated with the same charm and respect, bravo France.

It is a lovely family-run business with a rich history, and you can really feel the passion and tradition behind every bottle. The Champagnes were delicious, refined, and memorable, which made it impossible for us to leave empty-handed. We were so pleased with the experience that we happily bought a few bottles afterwards.

5 Amazing tour, so welcoming and informative! (Megan)We had an amazing tour, it ended up just being the two of us as we went out of season but it meant that it felt even more personal walking around the beautiful property and vineyards. We also booked the wine and chocolate option and felt that the flavours and notes of the wines and how they paired with each chocolate was very interesting. Of course, we had to buy a bottle to drink later! We would love to come back during the warmer months.

5 Lovely Wine Tour (Timothy)Was a lovely wine tour - walking through the vineyards. Celia was amazing guide explaining all the way the vineyard works, planting and the wine making process. Then back to the cellar to taste some beautiful wines. A very worthwhile experience. We even were able to taste a new orange wine that wasn’t even bottle as of yet, which was incredible!

Finished with tasting the vineyards selection of wine. All for nice with good explanation on the process involved with each one Absolutely fantastic and fully recommend. 5 A personal experiencie full of history (CONSTANZA)If you want to visit an authentic local vineyard with little industrial intervention, this is the place. Lucas is the owner of the vineyard and, although he might seem a bit reserved at first, once he starts sharing his story and dedication to wine, you can feel his passion for preserving the winemaking traditions of Gaillac. Since we were the only ones at the tasting, the experience was very personal and welcoming. He lets you taste each wine freely while sharing stories in a friendly exchange of knowledge. He’s a great host, very approachable, and makes you dive into Gaillac’s winemaking history through his own experience. And of course, the wines are excellent in both quality and price — we took 4 bottles home!
